I absolutely love SJM but he is clearly struggling. With the games coming thick and fast over Christmas he'll have to be rested surely?

He's been out of form for weeks now. If he's not getting on to chances around the edge of the box, he's not adding a whole lot else.   You can see him busting a gut still, so the effort is there, it's just to very little effect.

I've been saying for the last couple of months he disappears in the second half, not half the player he was in normally a brilliant first half. Today despite his best efforts he really didn't turn up. Like everybody else, I can't understand why other then he's knackered. Whatever the reason, Dean needs to discover, address it and quickly.

I'm not sure why he should be knackered.  There are fewer games than in the Championship, and we're not in Europe.

For whatever the reasons, SJM is a shadow of the player we've come to know at VP at the moment.

But that comment is a wind up surely?

The report states that SJM will be rested against Liverpool tomorrow and that the midfielder was in considerable discomfort following Villa's 2-0 win over Newcastle last month, and a scan revealed a tear to a thigh muscle, thought to have sustained playing for Scotland.

McGinn has been having painkilling injections to get through matches, and was not able to take a full part in training sessions.
He is believed to have resumed normal training only last week, even though he still played every minute of the games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Leicester.

I'm no expert but that doesn't sound like the type of injury you can recover from if he's playing all the time.  Would anyone in the know hazard a guess at the recovery time with rest?

We need him at 100% asap.

We're chasing the ball a lot more in the PL. We kept the ball a lot more in the Championship.

If he's playing through an injury it's going to end in tears. Give him a rest and get the other midfielders to start pressing like bastids.

Fair play, what a trooper.  Hopefully he'll be back to his best soon.

Hard to understand why we didn't rest him for at least one of those games though.  He's too important to us to risk long term injury.

Makes a hell of a lot of sense. Have to say I'm massively disappointed in Dean Smith if true that McGinn has a thigh muscle tear and he's been letting him play through it week-in, week-out. Wilfully stupid.

I want DS to stay and be successful here but it seems like every day that passes just raises another big question about his management this season.

Makes a mockery of the 'we have two players for each position' comment when we are not playing SJM's replacement?
