I'm sorry but I can't remember the author but I read a very good book about Dresden and what it went through over those two nights in February 1944.  Harrowing stuff indeed.

Frederick Taylor. His book on the Berlin Wall is excellent too.

That's the one and, believe it or not, I've read the Berlin Wall book too, just couldn't remember the author.

Just looking at flights to Germany for this, i see there are 3 airports around Berlin, Tegel, Templehoff and Schoenefeld.
Flybe fly from Brum to Tegel just really wanna know which is the easiest for rail journey on to Dresden....If Tegel Ok ill stick with
FlyBe from brum.
Ryanair from Manchester cheaper but that flies to Schoenefeld

Any advice please

Templehoff is no longer a functioning airport - park and museum I believe.

Apologies if already covered but I’m thinking of taking my 7 year old to the friendly in Germany. As I haven’t travelled abroad with Villa since Utrecht a few years back, can anyone confirm how easy it’s likely to be to get tickets for this?

It was very easy for last summer's friendly in Duisburg. And with the cost of travel all the way down to Saxony I hardly think we'll sell all our allocation

Do I recall reading that around 50k people died in Dresden over a few night during the raids?

Wiki

Quote
The bombing of Dresden was a British/American aerial bombing attack on the city of Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony, during World War II in the European Theatre. In four raids between 13 and 15 February 1945, 722 heavy bombers of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and 527 of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city.[1] The bombing and the resulting firestorm destroyed over 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) of the city centre.[2] An estimated 22,700[3] to 25,000[4] people were killed, although larger casualty figures have been claimed.

Large variations in the claimed death toll have fuelled the controversy. In March 1945, the German government ordered its press to publish a falsified casualty figure of 200,000 for the Dresden raids, and death toll estimates as high as 500,000 have been given.[15][16][17] The city authorities at the time estimated up to 25,000 victims, a figure that subsequent investigations supported, including a 2010 study commissioned by the city council.

The exact figure will never be known because thousands of bodies were burnt to a cinder in the intense heat. 25,000 dead is a conservative estimate.

I'll be there tomorrow with a British group. I always try to give a balanced account of the bombing. My parents, who had relatives in Coventry when it was bombed in 1940, said that the destruction of Dresden was seen at the time as a deserved retaliation. There is no doubt that Dresden, with its industry and rail links, was a legitimate target. Whether the intensity of the bombing was justified is another question.

The message of the rebuilt city is forgiveness and reconciliation, symbolised by the Coventry Cross of Nails.

I see that Wolves are at home on the first day of the PL. As the EFL starts a week earlier and we are nearly always at home, when Wolves are, it looks like our first fixture will be away.

Hell’s bells. I move 400 miles north to Aberdeen and I’m still not safe, the  blinkin Albion have announced a friendly at Pittodrie next month. I’m booking a simultaneous weekend in the Gorbals, the prospect of blue & white striped shirted wasters walking up Union St is too much to take.

When would you expect the ticket information to become available (in particular for the Dresden game)? I keep checking the OS every day but nothing yet.
