Mark was a very good player for Charlton and Ireland prior to breaking his leg pre-Villa. GT2 unfortunately read too much into his solid performances for a Roy Keane less Ireland in the 2002 WC.

Sir Graham wanted to recreate the Ireland midfield pairing, but unfortunately got by far the weaker of the two players and not the one who was any good.
