The answer is Messi. Any other answer is so wrong it becomes almost right before continuing on to being very very wrong indeed.

Cristiano. Is not my choice. Lionel is mine.

Not a lot between them, but for me one is genuinely pleased if his team wins and he contributes without being the player of the day, or scoring the winning goal, one is not. That sums up their contribution and greatness for me.

Messi edges it for me, although the proper Ronaldo was better than both IMO.

Messi for the team, Ronaldo is for Ronaldo. No contest.

Brazilian Ronaldo was the best for me too.

Messi is better at:

Football
Being a Gentleman
Being a team player
Tax evasion

Ronaldo is as much a brilliant footballer as he is a huge preening cock end. My main reason for disliking him is that he played for the Red Filth

I'm not that fussed about who Ronaldo has played for, I just think he's a bellend and plays like it. He's the sort of player that you just know if someone else on the team is getting some praise will be stood thinking "he's shit compared to me". Messi on the other hand seems to just love being part of a good team and plays in a way that helps the team best. Or to put it another way, if you put Messi in a team with Pele, Cruyff, Zidane, etc he'd be every bit the player he is now, put Ronaldo in that side and I think he'd struggle with not being the big fish.

Good point Paul, but I think the one area where Ronaldo potentially has the edge is he is a bit more versatile than Messi.  Not that he would want to, but all his attributes (particularly his strength in the air) mean that Ronaldo could probably make a fist of playing in pretty much any position on the pitch.

If Villa signed him he’d be a left back.

Ronaldo and I hate him, but he is the complete player.  Messi is a little wizard but isn't as versatile.

For me Ronaldo possible the best all round player in my lifetime

Maybe today saw the end of an era for both of them.

I've seen a few people give this reasoning but it doesn't really make much sense to me. Why does it make Ronaldo a better player because he might be alright as a forward, or centre mid? In both cases you build a team around them so the chances of playing them out of position, so that their versatility means anything, are almost nil. I'm not saying it's wrong, it just seems a strange criteria to use to separate them, especially given they such different players.

For me Ronaldo is more trained whereas Messi is more natural. This isn't to say Messi doesn't train hard or that Ronaldo doesn't have bags of natural talent but rather that the best bits of their game rely on different things, with Ronaldo falling back on things that he can practise (free kicks, heading ability) and Messi relying more on moments of brilliance (such as his goal last week).

Messi doesn't roll his shorts up when he takes a free-kick. Also, he's not shit.
