Steve Agnew first team coach
« on: December 22, 2017, 01:58:41 PM »
As it says in the thread title. New addition to the coaching staff. Calderwood and Clemence retain their roles.

Seems a decent enough idea, he was with Bruce at Hull Tigers, apparently.

I think he played for Barnsley for about twenty years and 1000 appearances and had a spell playing for Brian Little at Leicester.

On paper at least it seems a very good idea. From what I've read about his time at Boro he seems a far better coach than manager. If there's one thing our team need more, other than a new manager, is a decent coach.

I wish him well and hope we see the team finally start living up to their potential and talent.

Judging from the article it seems that he retreated from the world since Monk came in at Boro so it's good to have resurrected him.

When Calderwood arrived at the club we became a lot less creative almost immediately. More resolute, but less creative. Hopefully Agnew restores some of the balance in or approach and identifies ways to open up our play, take more shots, score more goals. Ultimately get the ball to Hogan and get him up and running.

When Calderwood joined us, I felt confident we'd finally got a decent Coach in. Brighton fans credited him with so much of their attacking style and were terrified they'd be screwed without him. Either they were all completely wrong or Calderwood got Brucified.

Either way it wasn't a great deal for us.

He may be a great guy but presided over Boro's relegation last year as assistant and then temporary manager. Bruce, Clemence, Calderwood and Agnew isnt exacly a coaching dream team for me. Another lazy appointment, which smacks of jobs for the boys, again. Why not introduce something or someone completely different?

Majority of managers take teams to different clubs.

Mark Hughes has his team Tafia (apparently one of the reasons we didn't appoint him in 2011).

Mourinho has those annoying Portugese guys like Rui Faria on the bench with him at every club.

Conte has similar coaching team to what he had at Juventus as does Klopp.

SB actually dosen't have a regular assistant, he started out at SHA with Mark Bowen.

He also worked with Eric Black at a couple of clubs...

Calderwood was a left field choice as I don't believe they'd worked together before.

You can argue about the capabilities of them all but we all know how football generally works (who you know etc) so he's doing nothing different to what 90% of managers do when going from job to job.

Get the feeling we've got him in as Karanka is going to be next manager.

Who coaches our first thought to be. when we get a throw in, no matter where, to go 20 yards backwards and start from square one?

Can't we ever go fucking forwards??
