Aston Villa 2 QPR 1 New Years Eve 1983
« on: November 12, 2017, 05:31:48 PM »
I saw this from Trinity Road behind the dugouts as an 11 year old after a 'Villa Cubs' event at the Leisure Centre.

Villa were probably on the slide by now compared to the League Championship and European Cup winning days, although we could still hold our own at home.
Just short of 20,000 for this although a decent winner from Steve McMahon.

The 27,000 (?) capacity Holte looks a good 2/3 full to me.

Lets play guess the crowd.
First guess Herbert Douglas Ellis with 19,978.

I was offered a seat in a box for this game but went up the Holte as usual with my mates, as I didn't like the idea of no singing / shouting. Or swearing. Loved that goal by McMahon.

I was a thirteen year old on The Holte (as usual) that day and Steve McMahon was my favourite player at that point. I think people forget how good he was for a couple of years in a fading Villa team. As for not meeting your heroes, Steve McMahon is a prime example. Unlike SGT, Brian Little, Tony Morley, Gary Shaw, Gordon Cowans and Paul McGrath who were all fantastic when I met them at various points. Also Mark Bosnich, Dion Dublin and Lee Hendrie are nice blokes.

I have to admit I also found Tony Coton to be a nice guy when we met in Tenerife years back.

Thanks so much for sharing that, really enjoyed it.

I'm not sure i've ever seen a decent performance by Brendan Ormsby....though Paul Elliott was far worse.

The main thing I remember from this game was the fact that on the way there my Dad was telling everyone how under Tony Barton we never came back to win after going behind.  We subsequently came back to win after going behind.

Little did I realise at the time that the 'Villa proving me completely wrong when predicting' gene had also been passed on to me.
