Pre season 1988
« on: October 15, 2017, 01:32:58 PM »
Can anyone help? A Morton supporting mate sent me the team sheet from the Morton v Villa pre-season friendly in August 1988. Does anyone know what the score was? He was there but can't remember

Was that not one of the first games we saw David Platt? Something rings a bell. No idea of the score though.

Just done some surfing, I had a bit of a brain freeze forgetting he helped take us up the season before, also on a Morton forum someone posts the score, won't spoil the search for you.

We played at St Mirren on Sat 6/8/88 and Morton on Monday 8/8/88. That's as much as I can find.

Wasn't the St Mirren game the match where Warren Aspinall headbutted an opponent and SGT promptly flogged him to Portsmouth even though he had been our top scorer the season before?

Sorry Chico, no. My reference was a book entitled 'Aston Villa Friendlies Tours & Testimonials' by Bryan J. Sheppard published in 2012 but it doesn't include any scorers, albeit lists every result in the aforementioned categories since we were founded.

Thanks for the replies - interesting stuff. My mate tells me that Taylor used to takes Watford up to Morton in the early 80s for pre season friendlies.

Scorers v Morton were McInally, Birch & Thompson. We also beat St Johnstone 2-1 prior to the St Mirren defeat.

Right then, I’ve been beaten to the punch, but I thought I'd post these Mail clippings from the 8/8/1988 & 9/9/1988 anyway. I came across a few other interesting bits......the last domestic TV before the breakaway.
I’ve also tried to pixel out a picture that might be offense to some!
The Morton 3-2 details:
Team:
Spink, Price, Gray S, Cooper (Olney), Evans, Keown, Birch, Platt (Gray AA), McInally (Thompson), Cowans, Williams
Scorers:
McInally, Birch, Thompson
