Who would you say was the bigger team Small Heath or Tescos
« on: September 11, 2017, 10:11:09 PM »
Serious topic!

Most would probably say SH - I will go for the baggies  based on their semi final turn outs during my lifetime, their lowest points again from 1960 onwards, the trophy cabinets, their national profile,  out of town supporters clubs, the grounds and potential to grow.

All I see is SH getting smaller by the season.

You may as well throw Wolves into the mix too. I see them as being all fairly similar in size and stature, but Baggies probably edge it at the moment for the simple fact that they've been in the Premier League longer than the other pair...but Wolves would probably have bigger potential if they had the same sustained amount of time in the PL.

It would depend on who I would have to catch them off....

West Brom by an absolute mile. They've won every domestic honour while Small Heath are restricted to two League Cups.

You can have a debate as to which is the second biggest club in Birmingham and the Black Country, out of West Brom and Wolves. Small Heath aren't even in the discussion.

I'd put Wolves above the Albion.  They've won the league more and have won the same number of FA Cups and reached a European fnal. And don't forget they were the "world champions" for a while in the 50s........ And I hate them less than I hate Albion.

I don't think most would say SH at all. Baggies have won a lot more than SH and spent a lot more time in the top flight too. Having said that, I'd have Wolves just edging above the Baggies, then SH, then Cov, then Walsall.

I'd say over the last 50 years Coventry are ahead of the Rags. They also have an FA Cup to their name, a bigger stadium and spent from 1967 to 2001 in Division 1/PL.

Blues have spent nearly double the amount of time Coventry have in the top-flight though. Plus I'd say they have a bigger fanbase, I'd say that's more important than Coventry having more spare seats in their ground.

I remember Terry Weir giving me a lift back from Villa Park after an away game at QPR in 1983 and we were chatting about this. He said that if you were writing a book about the history of English football then you would have a chapter on both Wolves and the Albion. Blues would be a footnote.

Nothing in the past 34 years makes me disagree with that assessment. I'd have Wolves as bigger than Albion, partly because when i was a kid they had a decent team which won the league cup twice and reached a European final.
