Football is 25 years old today.
« on: August 15, 2017, 12:21:00 PM »
Aug 15 1992. What did we do before it was invented?
Heard a couple of twats on the radio this morning eulogising about how great the PL is and the money it has brought into the game. One of them even mentioned the number of customers that turn up for games so it must be good.
Customers FFS.
Another one described it as great theatre. No you knob it's sport, If I want to see great theatre I'll go to the Hippodrome or the Rep.

Glory-hunting wankfest. You just have to keep hoping that it will self-destruct at some point

I actively hate top-flight football now. The money being hoarded by the few richest clubs is not just ridiculous from a sporting point of view; it's obscene. It's lead to a generation of pampered shits in thrawl to their shyster, gangster agents with no concern for anything but their next vulgar cars and vulgar houses and to clubs, once vital to local communities, at the beck and call of media empires, who think it acceptable to call supporters 'customers' - like a crap train company worming its way out of a ticket price hike - and wouldn't think twice about playing matches at 7:30 on a Tuesday morning, if they thought of few thousand more online gamblers would be more likely to be watching.
The Premier League is faster, more skillfull, more spectacular, more corrupt, more artificial and more dead than ever before. In years to come, it will be held up as an allegory for the death throes of our shit economic system.

Been watching first ever MOTD on the red button.

Quality absolutely dreadful from pretty much all the games I've watched, Sheffield United-Man United on atm and it's like a Pulis-Steve Bruce showdown.

Long throws, shots going 20 yards over the bar, players even struggling to pass 5 yards as they can't even move their feet quickly.

Of course there are games and teams like that now but it really seemed like all 20 played like that in those days which shocked me tbh.

MOTD was pretty much like Channel 5 Highlights. One featured game and the rest were 1 minute highlights or under.

Our 1-1 at Ipswich was 20 seconds long.

Plenty of nonsense around Football these days but give me the wall-to-wall modern day coverage anytime.

Most games had no TV coverage back then. As a kid it was always exciting to see the TV lorries at the ground as it meant we'd be on TV.

Five of us were in a car crash coming back from our first PL game at Ipswich. I think we all ended up at Kettering hospital but were checked over and got a lift back home. Good job my old man had an estate and could fit one or two of us in the boot!

Every game had TV coverage in 1992. Come to think of it, I started watching in 1988 and can't ever remember a time when you couldn't at least see the goals, either on a highlights programme or on local news. The only exception was Chelsea away who, I think, are missing from my 1989-90 VHS because Ken Bates banned cameras from the ground.

I'm on about when I was a kid as i'm an old git. It had improved by the late 80s early 90s. 1983 was the first league game broadcast live on TV in my lifetime.

Took us hours to get Ipswich, mate on map reading duty thought it was near Scarborough. Seem to remember getting quite stoned during the several hour journey.
