Argentina behind after forty seconds but Messi scores a hat-trick as they qualify alongside Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia. Peru playoff against New Zealand.

America knocked out! They somehow lost to Trinidad and Tobago. Panama got a late winner against Costa Rica to join their opponents and Mexico in the finals. Honduras beat the Mexicans and earn a playoff against Australia.

I’ve been laughing at my US mates. They are in shock. Studio panel almost in tears.

I watched the game and that's the first time I can recall Messi being Messi when in an Argentina shirt, or at least doing Messi things. Usually he looks like a slightly more upmarket N'Zogbia when he plays for the national team. Those goals were quality. Also so the one-two for Di Maria's chance in the first half.

I hope that Kornheiser and Wilbon are on PTI tonight. It'll be hilarious, likewise Tony's podcast today

Glenn Whelan will be at the World Cup but "USA, USA, USA" won't. Marvellous.

That's if they get through the plays offs.

Which would also mean MON being there, which is somewhat less marvellous.

Football was a hell of a lot tastier 24 years ago everywhere. In 1993 we went to the Sty and there was a battle on Garrison Lane. We will go in a few weeks time and nothing will happen.

The games moved on.

Was there? Cant say i remember that, and football was "a hell of a lot tastier?" i cant say i saw any major problems at all following Villa home and away in the late 80's early 90's.

Worth noting that two in a row Copa America winners Chile, failed to qualify too.

That South American group is tough. I would like to see one big Americas section.

Some strange results, Paraguay after beating Columbia last week manage to blow their chance of qualification by losing to Venezuela.

Peru will fancy their chances over two legs against New Zealand, in the next set of rankings they are likely to move up to 8th, they are a good young team who will improve, could be dark horses next year (if they get through their play off)
