I don't think there is a history of trouble between the two sets of supporters and I see no reason why there would be now.

They played each other in 1993 and I don't recall any serious trouble.

It was, however, notable for my old man joining me and a mate in The Dubliner to watch the match and catching me smoking for the first time, he was furious.

I was 23 years of age.

Look, the Irish pundits even said tonight that McClean wasn't going to be the one to play intricate one-twos on the edge of the box and work an opening, but he is what he is.  Seems a bit odd to bag him for technical deficiency tonight.

Wales and plenty of other sides could benefit from a combative winger, it seems.

I'm sure monkey boy Bale would and wee Barry Bannan would be OK with this level of failure. Ireland are nailed on for an absolute dog of a draw in the play-offs, though. Portugal or Italy away second leg would be my guess.

I severely doubt if Ronaldo was even 50% fit that he would sit out a major game like last night.

As much as Northern Ireland/Occupied Six are the best draw for going through, can see it leading to carnage pre and post game in Dublin and Belfast given that they are evening kick offs and everything else that goes with it.

Looking at the rankings posted by Comrade Blitz above isn't it impossible for Ireland and N Ireland to play each other?

Yeah, and Denmark are tipped to be in the seeded lot. Slovakia are out, they finished 9th.

It was much worse than anything I've seen in the Championship. It was an abomination of a "football" match.

It wasn't great but I knew.....we all knew, that once Ireland scored to take the lead the MON instruction would have been to revert to bus parking mode and pretty much nothing else. In fairness, they did that exceptionally well.  Not pretty but effective none the less. They might try the same tactic in the play off.  Against tougher more savvy opposition I doubt it will be as effective but I really hope to be proved wrong.

I thought the bookies had Sweden to beat Holland tonight at ridiculously high odds. Holland have to throw the kitchen sink at it but that could leave them vunerable at the back. People must have seen the odds and lumped on as the price has come down to 3/1.

The latest rankings will be coming out on Monday. NI and ROI will be unseeded in the playoffs.

It’s ridiculous you can finish second and not even get a play off shot. Some groups are clearly stronger than others.

It was a vile night.

Let's not forget that next summer some of the Billy boys murdered six people in a pub in Down while they were watching Ireland beat Italy in the World Cup.

That's the kind of history involved not to mention the FAIs recent recruitment policies and a sizeable cohort of braindead followers on both sides.

Football was a hell of a lot tastier 24 years ago everywhere. In 1993 we went to the Sty and there was a battle on Garrison Lane. We will go in a few weeks time and nothing will happen.

The games moved on.

As has the situation in Northern Ireland. They can't play each other, but if they did it wouldn't be too bad. Certainly no more intense than the atmosphere you might encounter against, say, Poland or Serbia away.

Twenty-five years ago. There's been a few developments since then.

They should change the format of the World Cup into a straight annual knock out competition like the FA Cup. Put the name of every country into the world in a hat and get Ian Wright and some bloke out of Kasabian to draw the home and away teams respectively.  If it's England away to Kiribati so be it. And Man U would be the live TV game.

You just know that FIFA would love to have the likes of ManUre and Real Merde in the World Cup...
