20 years ago maybe there was a lot of hysteria over the England team doing well in tournaments but nowadays no one expects us to do any good

We went out to Iceland last time ffs

The press whip nothing up they are the biggest critics
I still watch England games (tv) and want us to do well but we have a very average side and just getting out of the group stages would be a good result in Russia, I don’t think that’s getting to carried away but won’t be surprised if we fail to do even that again

England 38 (thirty eight!) games unbeaten in qualifiers.  There haven't been any games against recognised big teams in that run, and most have been against minnows like San Marino, Scotland, Moldova and Wales, so it shows that England are the very definition of flat track bullies.  Qualify easily against non entity teams, but then shit the bed every single time at the finals as soon as they meet anybody decent.

Not. Biting.

Last two tournaments - played 7, won 1. Says it all. (And the teams we failed to beat included Costa Rica, Slovakia and Iceland).

This for me still sums up just how poor England have been at tournaments.

How's this for a stat, we've won 6 Euro/WC knockout games since 1966. Paraguay (1986), Belgium and Cameroon (1990), Spain (1996), Denmark (2002) and Ecuador (2006). Spain remains our only ever knockout win in the Euros.

Even that wasn't a proper "win".

Really can't see that ROI 11 beating Wales.

Even then they could well miss out as the worst second place team.

Looks like I made the right decision to go to see the new Blade Runner film instead of watching our national show yet again how terrible they are.

was it any good?

I thought it was amazing. Great visuals and acting and storyline followed on from the original really well. The future in this film looks even more bleak than England's world cup prospects.

Not my cup of tea. I will wait for the 'Blade Runner Killer' film that is out in November, I believe. Unless Oscar Pistorius' family succeed in getting it banned.

Agreed. While I refuse to lower my expectations for Villa its just not a choice with England. We are not a top tier footballing country at the international level. While getting a foreign manager will help us on the coaching front our player ability level is just second rate.

Don't knock Iceland. I lumped onto them by quite an amount by my standards to beat Turkey tonight at odds of 3/1. Turkey 0 Iceland 3.

I won't lie. In between placing the bet a few days ago and tonight, I did look at said bet and wonder what the hell I had been thinking.
