Good mate of mine is a Colchester fan. Shame I'm not in the UK for it. Or him to that end. 3-1 Villa.

Shades of 74 - league cup game at Layer Road , league cup winners and promotion.  Take that no questions even if it means losing against  Ipswich  in the other cup

Have we played Colchester since the game in the late 1970s which went to penalties and we won 9-8?

I don't think so. Wasn't Mike Walker in goal for them then? Father of Ian Walker and a 'great manager' for Norwich and Everton for a while before he seemed to dissapear off the face of the earth shortly afterwards.

No I don't think so.
I remember that match. We'd won away at Layer Road and then lost to them in the second leg.

I'm pretty sure it was Mike Walker (ex Everton and Norwich manager) who was their keeper and he missed the deciding penalty, or he missed one at any rate as all the outfield players had taken one.

I think it was our first competitive penalty shoot out and we haven't had very many since considering the number of cup ties since then. Obviously Tranmere, Inter and Bolton and one v Wimbledon I recall...

Meh. We're never going to get to use our "free" cup game ticket.

I was at that Wimbledon game and I'm sure Vinnie Jones scored the winning penalty in front of the away end and 'gave it the big un'. Which tempted me to key his heavily named and sponsored car in the car park. But I saw sense and walked away. I think Shaun Teale missed for us.

I think it's all part of a cunning plan to make sure that our free cup game ends up being Real Madrid at home in the 19/20 Champions League group stage...

It's understandable. I'm sure they also want to make sure we get to use it in a game we will win easily.

By my reckoning we've played Colchester 3 times, all in the LC. A 2-1 away win in the QF in 1974, and in the 1979 2nd round we won the first leg 2-0 away and lost the second leg 2-0 at home.

So, another season goes by without being able to use our "free" cup ticket unless we get drawn at home in the FA Cup against someone like Taunton Town Reserves!!

We did play Colchester in pre season back in 2008 or so, was a 2-2 and Harewood scored for us, maybe even Sidwell too. my dad supports Colchester and lives about five mins from their ground so I went to this one.

I was there -  I think we had both Little brothers playing in same team - Alan and Brian?

Maybe to open their new stadium as think they moved into it that year.

It's a pain to get to and apparently the stadium is miles out of town also.
