Whoscored.com do heat maps of players positions when they touch the ball.

https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1192399/Live/England-Championship-2017-2018-Aston-Villa-Nottingham-Forest

In general their midfielders are more advanced than ours and they use both fullbacks supporting whilst we predominately use the right back.  Their center backs had twice as much of the ball as ours in a slightly more advanced position but their two center backs tended to eventually go long much more than ours did.

Elmo plays long balls far too much and gives it away.

The problem with looking at anything like that for this match is that the difference in possession means their heatmaps look 'fuller' than ours but there's 2 key bits to ours for me.  1 is how high up the pitch Adomah was compared to Snodgrass, the other is how often Whelan and Hourihane were filling in on the right, both of these back up the comments about Snodgrass from the match thread, I think he'll be fine but he had a really poor game.

The other interesting one is that Whelan completed 2 of 5 tackles and 4 in every 5 passes.  Those are the 2 things he's there to do and he was poor at both, again that backs up the criticism of him.

I stand by the original point though, if your getting people up the pitch on the heatmaps (the average position graphics are better but you have to sign up to Opta to get those) then you'll normally win, sometimes a counter-attacking team will mug you but over a season that will be the exception.  As with any stats it only means anything in context with loads of others though.

4 points off automatic places... Which surely buys him time. Another win on Saturday and we're going to be higher I suspect.

It shouldn't be about shoving words down our throats but if that's what is motivating him then so be it. He's brought Adomah back in after having ignored him for most of the season and it has literally changed the season. Kodjia coming back is a bonus. I'm happy we are winning. I'd like for Bruce to concentrate now on the positives and push on.

Nearly there.

Bruce in. When he does exactly what I wanted (we played well) plus gets a kick ass result like that, well what can I do but hold up my hands and admit I was wrong? Nicely done.

When he's got us in the top two then the pressure is off a little, winning is great but we expect to be winning at Burton.

All credit to the players tonight. When we loose it's everyone's fault expect for him so the way I see it is when we ein then it is down to everyone else. You can't have it both ways Steve.

I think it's time to start focusing on the positives rather than grudgingly give feint praise. We are on a brilliant run and long may it continue.

He's found a formula. That's what he's paid to do, therefore he deserves credit.

Obviously if we lose the next game he's shit and must go immediately.
