I don't think we'll sack him yet. The board will give him til the end of the month. The problem with this is, like Brian said, if Bruce scrapes a win he'll just buy himself more time and we'll be doing this all over again when he has another shit run, probably in October.

For me it makes no difference if he wins the next 3 games back to back. He has had 'good' runs with us before and failed to build on it, to convince anyone including the players that the wins are based on any kind of plan, or even to win while looking competent.

I realise it's a theoretical problem now, but for the first time I'd want him gone even if it meant staying down playing decent football with a plan rather than going up as a bunch of bleeding-eye non football merchants. I want us to stop being such a hateable team.

I'd like to get Steve Bruce to watch the video from last night, and talk us through it.  Let him try to point out what he thought was good about 15% possession in the first half, and why overall we deserved at least a draw.

Its got to the stage now where it is risk free in terms of getting rid of him. It is simply a choice of
A) We have 10 months of history and form to know what kind of football/tactics/results we will get. Bruce wont change, if he stays then we wont even get a play off place given the evidence

or
B) We install some Hope. We get a new man in who may have an attacking mind-set and know's how to get the best from this team who on paper should have zero excuses.

For me Hope win's every-time. We have to do something though in terms of taking action to turn things around. Evidence shows us what we can expect from Bruce moving forwards..
Time is ticking.

In fairness, we are being a bit harsh on Bruce on here.

He came in with a remit to get us out of this league, I don't recall anyone specifying whether that was to the Premier or League 1.

From what I've seen over the last few years, the players are the problem.  But it's the tip of the iceberg.

Kodija and Chester apart (last few games excepted) there hasn't been a single signing who's looked capable of winning promotion.

The situation is in as much of a mess as the start of the relegation season - not enough quality and too many square pegs in round holes.

Not enough pace, not enough goals, a midfield that doesn't get forward (because the defence is so deep?)

Bruce is only partially culpable but looks very unlikely to sort it out.

Wyness has made two mistakes - does he get a third chance?

Xia continues to worry  - no idea about football, publicity hungry, complex financial arrangements/dodgy business record,  unlikely to have access to funds for further investment (&/or get round fair play rules).

The whole thing is a shambles.

I didn't want Bruce to repalce RDM. I was all for giving RDM more time. Problem now is that I have absolutely no idea who could replace him. We've tried the foreign manager route, we've tried poaching good managers from other clubs, we've tried the untried manager and nothing seems to work. We need someone dynamic, a tactician, someone who reacts to what is happening on the pitch and changes it accordingly. Most pundits are saying we have the best squad in division 2, but they are not playing like a team, and they certainly aren't playing for Bruce. if he's lost the players division 3 beckons.

'Foreign' isn't a type of manager.

Exactly this. We may well win the next three but the trend is backwards. the longer he stays the longer it will take to recover from him

If you will take a read of this letter by a Sunderland fan in Sunderland forum a live supreme back in the day . Around 2010 or 2011

(This supporter  wasn't the only one to question what's going on with bruce and ive included other comments which we could have been writing very similar as villa fans today ,! )

"Dear ALS

There is a myth regarding Sunderland at the moment, one that is prevalent not only in the National Media; though even more worryingly, in the Sunderland dressing room. The myth that the expectations of the Sunderland fans are in any way the root cause of the issues facing the club at the moment.

For the record, until the Wigan game last weekend I was still behind Steve Bruce. Even for the most resolute supporter however, there comes a time when enough is enough. Let’s look at the facts: from the last 27 league games, Sunderland have taken 21 points. The only saving grace is that this has been over the tail end and beginning of 2 seasons, rather than 1, as otherwise the club would find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Premiership table. The clubs home form, which in the recent past has been key in enabling the club to re-establish itself in the Premiership - has took an alarming turn for the worst, with only 2 victories in 2011 to date compared with only 3 defeats in 2010.

Possibly even more worrying for the fans however; is that recent performances on the pitch do not offer any hope of improvement. Back to back home games against fellow strugglers Fulham and Wigan were touted as the "start of the season" by Bruce; however the new start followed the same path as the rest of the calendar year with 1 point taken from 2 games. Put simply, this is relegation form and we have a side who look devoid of the striking power or creativity to get us out of it.

For this point you also have to look to the manager. After signing over 30 players in his time on Wearside, questions must be raised on how we still find ourselves with areas on the pitch where we are extremely short; such as being without a specialist left back, left winger and only 1 centre forward with previous Premiership experience (who is on loan). For all the potential that Wickham and Ji may or may not have, to expect either to perform weekly in the Premiership is too much for young lads still massively learning their trade.

You then look at the players who have left and havent been replaced; Bent, Cana and Malbranque were all big players for the club who have left and despite Bruce having had the time to replace them, no obvious replacements have came in. Then adding to this some of Bruce's recent additions who look very questionable, paying £6m for Craig Gardner for example who has not been able to oust Jack Colback from the first team in recent weeks, and questions must be asked over our recent recruitment policy and how the squad has been allowed to regress to the alarming level it has over the past 12-18 months.

In terms of fan expectations, is there any club in the country where 21 points from 27 would be good enough? Let alone a club who have had the level of investment that has been made over the past few years.

The bottom line is that it isn't good enough. And the only way forward for Bruce is through the exit door.

Here's hoping "

And worrying history repeating itself as feeling and seeing what these Sunderland fans were seeing

"The fact is, is that there have been difficult periods in every one of the seasons that Bruce has been in charge. Another fact is that when difficulty strikes he does not seem to know what to do or how to act under pressure."

"Dear ALS

Bruce is on borrowed time. Not a hysterical note. Consider this gem of a quote, “We finished tenth last season.”

He’s a kidder that boy! Do me a favour; it certainly was not by design. This season’s poor start is just an extension of the last one (irrespective of the squad make up). Letters of previous eras and managers are blind and have nothing to do with our present predicament. We have been blessed with a great platform to drive our club forwards, it cannot be allowed to be screwed up as it will with the present management team, we will get left behind always being jealous of the likes of Stoke.

The team, contrary to popular opinion is nowhere near as good as last season. If you were happy with a dodgy point against a bad West Bromwich team, therefore craving mid table mediocrity, you need to, as a previous contributor suggests, go to the Smoggies at the Riverside. "

"Dear ALS

Once again we are treated to such verbal gems as, “We have had a massive turnover of personnel”, "There's six or seven players playing their fourth or fifth game here and they know what it is all about now." And “I’m the same that took the club to tenth last year and I’ll carry on the best way I can.”

Do those comments fill others with confidence? They certainly don’t in my case.

This season so far we have picked up one point out of a possible six against promoted sides, had another derby nightmare and our only win came against a subpar/knackered Stoke side.

I’m pleading with messrs Quinn and Short. We have an international break coming up, this means you have two weeks before the Arsenal game to make the necessary changes. I know that Mr Bruce has invested heavily but surely there is a manager out there that can get better performances from the players we have already got. "

Now that is exactly the thoughts and observations many of us have on Bruce today

hold on,we were talking about the next three games after the Cardiff debacle.
We have now played (and lost) one of those.

I hope its not a 'rolling' 3 game situation we are now talking about.
