MON was overachieving with his first 6th place, but I think was underachieving by the end. His storming out and spending all the money, burning Lerner's fingers quite sorely, also made his legacy looking less rosy than it might have (not to mention the unfit, lazy, old, overpaid nothings he left us loaded with). Fair to say it's not his fault it's got as shit as it has, though.

Without wishing to repeat myself, I'd take it now!

The thing is, you look at our squad and then the way someone like Dean Smith is trying to manage at Brentford, and you could see him getting much more from the likes of McCormack, Hourihane, Hogan, Grealish even, because his team tries to play attacking football, but as Soccer HQ said, he is a very streaky manager.

The guy at Fulham is much more consistent, the other option being to look at up and coming coaches, or do what Swansea did with Monk and give it to Terry with an experienced number 2.

Alternatively Bruce should demote Calderwood to first team coach and bring in Mike Phelan as no 2 and let him sort us out tactically.

Me too. I'm just saying I don't think it was all down to him (and also his Sunderland spell showed how outdated he's become in club football).

I am not fond of the shitey tribute act, no. At its best, it's like the original at its worst

MON spent a fortune on some very average players when the money ran out he left. Bruce can do one, his brand of football is dire, its one thing being beaten playing an attacking brand of football it's another to be beaten badly while having no clue what an attack looks like.

I dont want MON back, but he had us play far better football than Steve Bruce.

If we want to be a passing side, we lack enough technically gifted players. If we want to be a dynamic and energetic side we lack the stamina and energy. We want to be a quick counter attacking side? We lack the pace. We want to be a side which scraps 1-0 wins? Probably the closest to Bruce's vision I would say...but we're lack the solidity, and with Kodjia injured, the game winner. Further more the player who can unlock a game with skill or vision when things are tight.
Great summary!

Agree and again that lack of clear thinking has been applied to our transfers.  Bruce obviously had 4-4-2 in mind for sometime, but then brings Whelan in, who after only couple of games into the season looks like he hasn't got the legs to play in a two and would be more suited to a holding role in a three man midfield.

It's meant to be an open-mouthed face of shock, dismay, and general suggestion of stunned dissatisfaction with the scheme of things (to quote Wodehouse).
