Pretty sure Sir Graham had a full pre-season behind him and this is SB first?

Was it as good as this pre season?

It's impossible to be promoted by Christmas.

Thank you

What problems now? A ball hasn't been kicked in anger. Pre season is two weeks old.

You are being deliberately obtuse.

People have expressed concern that from what we have seen the same problems / style of play / lack of goals from last season seems to be present in the pre-season games so far.  Having had half a season with most the players and a full summer with just about all of them, hoping to see some form of progression in terms of tactics, style of play and ability to get the ball in the net (against inferior opposition) doesn't seem to be too much to hope for.

Nobody expects pre-season to be perfect, but hoping for some sign of progression from last seasons dross is hardly asking a lot.  It takes a bit of a leap of faith to trust that everything will change overnight when the season starts when the pre-season looks and feels exactly like us at our worst during last season.

Being obtuse because the only thing I'm bothered about in July is Ballance at 3, Jennings technique and the persistent failure of the top order?

It was remarked that our problem at the start of last season was fitness. Everybody seemed capable of running us off the park. I hope this pre-season sees a dramatic improvement in fitness. How we play with Hutton and Richards as centre half or Gabby up front doesn't particularly interest or concern me.

Your prerogative to worry, don't fall out your tree when I don't join in.

Normally I am with you but I watched the second half last night. It was like January all over again.

I would ask if you're always this petty when people disagree with you but I already know the answer.

I do like the fact that you're trying to make out that me thinking nothing will change on the basis of him playing this way for 15 years elsewhere and repeating it here is premature but you were pretty much the first person I remember calling for RDM to be sacked, after 8 games.

However to give you an answer that your post really doesn't deserve I'd expected to see him making some attempt to address the problems that were there last season, he repeatedly said it wasn't good enough so it's not like he doesn't know we were shit but literally nothing has changed other than us being slightly tighter at the back whilst Terry is on the pitch.  He's then signed a 2nd new right back in 6 months and is looking at buying a 33 year old defensive midfielder to compete with our 33 year old defensive midfielder and has used our 20 year old defensive midfielder (as a sub) on the left wing and as a 10 in the last 2 friendlies.

It make me wonder what the like of Dean Smith would do with Aston Villa ? Will he be able to make us play football that we enjoy and score goals.

We've chewed up a fair few promising (and not so promising) young managers of late. I reckon it might be too big at this stage. It's why I was keen we try the more proven Bruce despite his limitations

Villa has been a sinking ship for years. I think people are in cloud cuckoo land if they think many managers would have got us promoted last season

Assuming these stats hold true then he still has the best win rate of our last six managers. Just saying. Be it in a lower league to be sure.

I am not happy with how we play either not at all but we absolutely can do worse manager wise and history suggests we probably will when/if we bin him.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aston_Villa_F.C._managers

Its a problem. I like the guy, i think we will probably be worse off with a new manager, but god he has us playing some awful stuff.

If a brilliant alternative comes along and we're struggling, let's go for it

But in our circumstances his track record merits a proper go at it this season

He had us on a couple of decent runs and a couple of godawful ones too. Most pundits and bookies seem to think we're going to do well, for once. I know it ain't pretty but this is just pre-season, trying a few things out.

It's pretty clear he's not going to be sacked any time soon, but a very bad run at the stat and he could be.

I think we forget just how big and difficult job being our manager is.
