He didn't really spend a great deal in January either really, apart from Hogan.

He probably spent £20m all told, just spread over a number of players.  Not one of them added anything very much.

And recouped £15m.

The Jan buys can be judged next season, but Taylor and Johnstone settled into looking good signings and Hourihane showed enough to suggest he could become one. Angela worries me the most.  Hogan will come good.

I think Taylor was probably the best bit of business, especially with Ayew going the other way plus some cash. Bree doesn't look too bad and I personally think Bjarnasson will come good. The rest do need to step it up though.

Bruce won't be given a lot of money to spend in the summer and will, in the main, have to go with what he's got, which will be a settled squad with enough to get out of this league. Last season there was too much change to expect a promotion push even though the change was needed.

If promotion isn't achieved next season, he'll be gone. It's as simple as that. If promotion is achieved, the process of change will have to start again but he'll be given the chance to start it and build a new team.

Either way, there will be more major change at the end of next season. But not before the start of it.

He has good contacts for the loan market should the need arise

But we did still buy Hogan. So it's basically saying "we didn't spend much money if you don't include all the money we spent".

Also, it may not feel like much money compared to the summer or the numbers coming out the Premier League, but the £4m or so that we spent on Lansbury is more than some of our rivals have ever spent on a single player in their history.

Lansbury was £1.75m wasn't he?

Having Googled it, most places seem to be saying £3m.

So that £3m is still more than the likes of Burton, Huddersfield, Brentford and others.

I think there is a good player in Lansbury.  We saw it against us in the league in September. And we've seen glimpses of it for us. Especially the second half against Brighton.  I'm expecting him to perform if we take the shackles off him and Hourihane next season.

If we're not in the top six at Christmas, I can see him going then.

I think the decision will be made sooner than Christmas.  I'd say 12 games or so into the season is enough time to see how things are shaping up.

It is but it's hardly the ideal time to find a replacement.

12 games is not very long.  If we have a really poor start, yes, a decision would be made but if it's a continuation of this season, the decision would be sail on hopefully, which is the worst position possible.  That is why a decision has to be made now, otherwise you are committed to continue until there is almost no way back.

If you count the games he's been in charge of this season, he'll have basically had a season in charge. I can forgive a slow start to the season- it can happen to any club, but 12 games in, we have to be comfortably in the top 6 in my view, else he can do one.
