The central tenet it appears to me of any successful football club is a strong defence and keeper and a shape when you don't have the ball which in turn leads to solidity and not letting goals in. The difficult bit is the creativity in front of that to score plenty of goals and have more control further up the pitch.

We all know Bruce can do the first bit, the two good runs we've had this season have been based on it, as others have said though where he's struggled historically is the second and there have been plenty of performances this season to show that. I think people are right to be sceptical but I'd balance that he has never had the size of opportunity he has here so maybe he can overcome it. He proved with the Brighton away performance, arguably our best of the season, what can be done, I unfortunately think he hasn't got consistent enough players to deliver that level of performance week in and week out.

Is the strength of the defence based on numbers, rather than quality.  With the resulting weakening of the constructive play and ability to hold on to the ball because of playing so deep.

I have a trophy wife.  She wins loads of Iron Woman trophies.  Takes her own ironing board.  I have a Midget in the garage.  But it belongs to Damon's son Toby.

It's not just a question of money, but time as well. The millionaire might find it easier to afford to go, but thay doesn't necessarily means he's free of other pressures or isn't sacrificing time perhaps best spent elsewhere if he wasn't an addict.

The point is, to me at least, neither is better than the other. Both go to as many games as they can manage.

Nah, it's the millionaire. definitely. has he got a trophy wife and a sports car?

He'll need a couple of great kids.

Anyway, I'm the best fan because there were loads of real brummies around me when the third goal went in at Brentford, deliberating about whether to leave in order to get back before 2am, whereas I fucked off straight away to get on the E2 bus and I was having a posh wank by the time Newsnight started.

When he took over we were averaging 0.9 points per game, we've averaged 1.6 points per game under Bruce. Hard to say he's taken us backwards really.

Agree PWS and he's achieved the basics of making us hard to beat and capable of winning games.  If we were to go up next season playing the way we have over the past few weeks then I certainly take that.  It would, however, be nice to blow the league away next season and go up in style.

the only stat that counts is the fact that when Bruce came we were 10 points of a play off place and now we are 11
he's been here 6 months and we are further away from a play off place than when he came
he's taken us backwards. Totally failed fucked up the season which had been a right off for a couple of months and people still think 'he's the Man '

the whole thing is being built on sand,
there is no tactics to speak of no pattern of play, it's grim to watch the good run we have been on whilst still not performing anything like a team which could gain automatic promotion next season has just papered over the cracks

Taken us backwards?? Are you sure about that? Strange seeing as when he got here we had dropped into the relegation zone, whereas now we are closer to playoffs then the relegation zone. Seems strange to say we've gone backwards when it's obvious that we haven't.

What I don't like is the snobbishness that sometimes comes from people who do that they get a better view of the game and can understand it better.  For a handful of people who fully appreciate the game that's true but for most people watching on TV will give you just as much insight.  If you don't think that applies to you then you should try to make it as a professional scout.

You get a much better view being there. You can see the whole pitch, all the players, look at what you want, when you want, you see off the ball movement, can watch reactions, appreciate the speed of movement etc etc. And why that means I should try and be a professional scout I don't know.

TV will never be as good as the real thing, coverage improves all the time (I'm not including ITV in that) but it's never going to be as good as the view you get being there.

Someone who sits in the Director's box will get a better overall view than someone in L1 too.

Of course someone who has seen every game is better qualified to comment than someone who's watched a couple of games on TV. I'm in the latter camp, having only been to the Yorkshire away and a couple at home this season. It doesn't mean I'm less entitled to have an opinion, but it does mean I should respect the views of someone who goes all the time and therefore has a more rounded opinion than I.

If people actually do all of that, and can show understanding of the game to talk about where things worked or didn't work then their opinions deserve that respect. I just think that the respect is earned by what you say and being in the ground doesn't make your opinion more worthy than anyone else. That last bit is what I'm talking about, I can't agree with disrespect being shown towards people who formed their opinion from watching on TV, especially when there have been so many televised games this season.  Thankfully it doesn't happen on here very often which is one of the many reasons this forum is better than any other football forum I've been on.

Additionally, to counter some of your points watching on TV (most TVs) gives you replays, pause, rewind, etc.  For some things this is better, there's been plenty of times where the conversation around the ground focuses on a potential penalty, or an offside decision and people at the game will have nothing like the same view of those incidents as someone watching on TV.  Additionally most TV footage is filmed from such a high angle that you can see half a pitch and, if you know what you're looking for, you can see a fair bit of movement, etc.

That's not saying it's better (the atmosphere alone makes being in the ground a far better experience), it's just different and like most differences there are positives as well as the negatives you list.

Who's the better fan, the retired millionaire that has the time and money to go to all 46 games with ease or the person that has to scrimp and save and makes sacrifices to go to 3 games?

I'd guess this is why Dave said "as a general rule".

There are plenty of fans who would love to go to more games but are unable to do so due to money, work patterns or location.

However, we all know plenty of people who class themselves as fans, live ten minutes from Villa Park, and will happily lecture you for half an hour about the club's deficiencies, but haven't set foot in the ground since BFR left. I reckon I'm a better fan than them.

Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that. They're probably a better fan of stamp-collecting, Made in Chelsea, animal pornography, or whatever it is that weird, freaky, non-football fans do with their time.
