Gary Shaw.
« on: November 29, 2016, 06:15:46 PM »
Just heard that Gary has been in hospital recently for another operation on his knee and is currently using a zimmer frame to get  around.
I've met him a good few times and once sticks in my mind, we were having a drink together and it was obvious he wasn't feeling too good, it ended with me having to help him into a taxi home because he could barely walk.
After I heard the news about yet another operation it set me to wondering, if sports medicine in the 80's had been as good as it is now, where would his career have taken him?
Good luck mate and hope to see you back in The White Horse soon.

I was in Hospital in about '84. I had my knee operated on by the same surgeon he did.  The surgeon told him I was a massive Villa fan, an he came to see me.  TOP BLOKE

Amazing how they deal with knee injuries these days. When I broke my knee 30 odd years ago was in hospital some 6 weeks. Recently had some cartilage shaved and was back in the club by the evening.

The problem with sportsmen like Gary shaw is that they had more injections than a junkie to keep them going

Wasn't that what pissed Andy Gray off with Ron Saunders?

Could have been an all time great. He had the instinct of Greaves in the penalty area.  Considering his size, he was very strong with the ball played up to him. His touch in playing in Withe and Morley was exceptional.

Without the injuries he could have been presenting Match of the Day in his pants.

My uncle damaged his cartilage whilst captaining Hull City reserves at Roker Park. At the time he was 17 having been signed by Manchester United and loaned back to Hull whilst he developed. It ended his career, these days he would be back playing within weeks.

So whilst I had an uncle who was at Manchester United and played in training sessions with the likes of George Best and Bobby Charlton and I had an aunty who lived in Salford, the same house she was born in within sight of Old Trafford I didn't use either of those tenuous links to support them. My uncle playing for Hull City was what saw me becoming a Villa supporter!

One of my favourite goals that I've seen scored live at Villa Park. That was the result when I started to really believe that we could win the league.

Get well soon Gary Shaw, Gary Shaw, Gary Gary Shaw.
