We've gone from being linked for Lansbury and Hourihane for relatively little, to what sounds like a net loss from swapping Gestede and Rhodes, two equally useless strikers when not given any service.

The critical sentence there is "when not given any service". Hopefully it's on its way. Pretty pointless bringing in any striker without trying to address the cause of the problem. Bruce MUST be on it, as the kids say.

With regard to Rhodes, I've never seen him play & I doubt many of the posters on here have seen him either. But we need a number nine worthy of the name.

I'd only ever seen Gestede play in the FA Cup game vs Liverpool before he signed for us & in that game he looked useful. But, in the flesh during his 20min appearance vs Man Utd it was obvious he was shite.

What do you mean net loss?

I wouldn't be too worried about the financial implications on any deal going forward. Dr. Xia has is going to throw tons of money at this club, 11m for Rhodes.. who cares.

I was never a fan of Rudy Gestede, we needed to dump him. I'm sorry but barring his height he has no redeeming qualities of a professional footballer. No ball control, can't shoot, can't pass, no pace.. Rhodes at least possesses some skill.

I'm really hoping Lansbury lands here.

Why are we buying a striker when we don't get the ball to the ones we've got or had? Seems a touch wierd.

No we haven't. We're still being linked with Lansbury and Hourihane as well, as well as other midfielders such as Cairney and Brady.

Get 1 or 2 of them in addition to Rhodes (167 goals in 324 games) instead of Gestede (52 in 182 games) and it'll be a decent start to overhauling the squad. It might just be that Rhodes is coming in first.

Bringing in a midfielder from Wolfsburg

http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2017/01/16/report-aston-villa-set-to-sign-anton-donkor-from-vfl-wolfsburg/
Quote
Reports in Germany are suggesting that Aston Villa are set to sign Anton Donkor from VfL Wolfsburg. It is being reported by Bild that Villa are set to sign the player after he was told first-team football was unlikely to be offered to him at the Volkswagen Arena.

It’s reported he is set to train with Aston Villa before concluding a permanent transfer.

Quote
The 19-year-old winger, full name Anton-Leander Donkor-Oppong, can play on either the right or left, but prefers the latter. He can even play through the middle.

Good luck getting his name into a chant (even though I am positively sure that there's only one of him). Although good news for shirt letter sales.

Ying tong ying tong Donkor-Oppong?
Earlier when I sent a text to a friend in Germany to ask about this player predictive text turned his name to "Another Donkey".

As long as it means no more Gabby, I'll take any striker.

me too - if Dr X's master plan for January was Gabby up top then it was criminally negligent

Rhodes has a distinct lack of ability as a player though.  Usually profits from mayhem caused by strike partners. Just don't see point.  Surely 4m on Sako at Palace would be a better signing.  Or Wells who works the channels? Can our scouts seriously not find 2 or 3 fairly cheap forwards that would thrive in the championship.  Leeds found Sacko, Brighton got Knockeart for a couple of million, Brentford found Hogan cheaply etc. For the price of Rhodes we could add 3 more useful players to this squad to find creativity etc. Use the money to make sure we get Lansbury, Hourihane and a winger.  Hell if it means the Westwood get the Watford guy too. Still not doesn't anywhere close to 11m on Rhodes. Don't see the point.  If he signs I really hope to be proven very wrong.

If we are determined to bit a Boro player, I read Ramirez is available. He was brilliant for them second half of the season.

Watching his goals again unless Bruce does find a way of getting more crosses and through balls into him, Rhodes will look just like the others.  Hourihane and Lansbury are the vital ones.  I would even take the winner at Peterborough if he can cross a ball and not just lose it like Grealish seems to have started doing lately.

Rhodes?  No!
Sort the MF, play the game a little higher up the pitch and our strikers will score (maybe even Flabby), because Adomah and Grealish will become more effective.

Agreed. Bit like buying your dream car (Pontiac Trans Am 77' for me) at a cost of £25,000 and then leave it sitting on the drive without putting any fuel in it. A pointless exercise.
