European Super Cup
« on: January 24, 2016, 11:13:59 AM »
Good article in The Guardian on our home leg of this fixture

http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2016/jan/22/golden-goal-ken-mcnaught-for-aston-villa-v-barcelona-1983-super-cup

I've always associated Barca with the style of play that they currently use, this appears to suggest they could 'mix it' as well.

They were animals that night and we were not that far behind truth be told.  Great night though, it was my birthday.

They made the Wimbledon team of the 80's look like a bunch of cheerleaders.

Absolutely amazing night. Brilliant atmosphere. Villa Park was rocking. Barcelona, that night, were the dirtiest team I've ever seen. Just goes to show though how good we were. Not only could we play a bit, we could mix it up when we had too. If you look back at that team there was some proper hard bastards in it. Even the flair players like Cowan's could perform a tackle that would snap some of the current teams wimps in half. All good teams need an enforcer type, we had Withe, McNaught and Evans. Happy days!

If there's footage anywhere look out for Peter Withe breaking their centre halfs nose when Shaw gets the first goal.

Pretty sure Alan Evans got sent off that night too along with a couple of theirs, and those were the days when you literally had to assault someone on the field to get sent off.

Their keeper was both the dirtiest and maddest man I've ever seen on a field. He just wanted to fight everyone. This was Barcelona!!!

Great game. I had forgotten about the three sending offs

I think the line about preparing for the quarter final of the European Cup against Juve summed up the contrast between then and now

Thirty seconds in, you can see Withe accidentally catching the Barcelona player in the face.

The closest thing you'll ever see to a pantomime on a football pitch. Urriti (RIP) their keeper was off his nut all night.

Used to watch it a lot on the Official History video and was always amazed at the moment when the keeper just slashes Sid's legs away from him after the penalty and how
incredible the atmosphere seemed - at the time, it wasn't something I'd experienced at Villa Park, having started going in '86.

It all seemed so recent then, watching it on video six years after it happened. Now it's 33 years ago!

And didn't one of their players get sent off for "catching" a through ball near the half way line - or have I dreamt that ?
