Competitive Balance in Football
« on: December 23, 2015, 11:41:23 AM »
An interesting article from the Economist with some of the usual statistics as to why this season has become more unpredictable.

I think it says that you have to have very skillful players to play tip-tap football and that Leicester have a good interceptor in midfield who gets the ball forward quickly to fast strikers who are good at shooting.

Either would explain why we're struggling to compete ........

Problem for any un-fancied team doing well is that the rich boys can come in a nick your best players. The biggest risk to Leicester is Chelski or Citeh coming in Jan ang offering silly money/wages for Vardy etc..

I know footballers are motivated by money etc, bit I can't see any of that Leicester side leaving in January. The summer, by all means, but they'll see the season out.

They will leave though and the challenge for Leicester, as it was for us is replacing better players with other really good ones. Southampton have done a good job of it coupled with an astute manager, but it isn't easy. Ands especially finding the likes of Vardy and Mahrez again and having them perform to that level. They won't leave this January unless someone puts in a crazy bid. The next challenge if they make it to the CL (can't believe I just wrote that) is to stick or twist on CL type players, or do they just go along for the ride if they feel they have no chance of maintaining that standard beyond this season.

And if Vardy rocks up at Chelsea he will suddenly become England's No1 striker even though during the form of his life he didn't get a sniff.

Hasn't he played every England game for which he's been available this season?

And one game last season, even though he only scored five goals for Leicester.

He didn't start any this season did he, not even the friendlies? What I meant was that he'll start every game even if he's on Chelsea's bench.

Played 90 minutes in two of the qualifiers and came on as a sub in another. He wasn't available for the last couple of friendlies because of injury.

Either way, it's hardly "not getting a sniff" is it?

I think Leicester will run out of steam pretty soon.
The squad is not strong enough to cope with injuries, suspensions and key players form dips.
I am enjoying what they are doing, it is refreshing.
Good luck to them.

Don't forget we only used 14 players in that season 1980-81.

Sigh. In years to come we may be reminiscing on the fact that we didn't reach 14 points in that season 2015-2016.
