How does this compare to 86/87?
« on: December 19, 2015, 08:48:10 PM »
I was 6/7 years old when we got relegated last time and so don't remember too much about it, for those that remember though, how does this shower compare? Also, we bounced straight back the year after in 87/88, do you think we have as a good a chance next year?

We won 7 of our 21 home games that season. Compared to 0 of how many so far?

This feels more of a hopeless cause if im honest.

In 86/87 we knew we were in trouble at Christmas. This year it's well beyond that.

The only reason i asked is because I have no memory of when we were last in this position, I hope more than anyone that we escape but i am also a realist....I am already mentally into next year.  Also, I have a little boy, 4 years old, I would love to start taking him to the villa to begin his journey but we are so useless, taking him to VP is fairly worthless at the moment. I think his time will begin in the champ though, like mine did when I was 7/8 back in the day. My first football memory is being on holiday stood next to my dad on the pay phone in Spain finding out we had drawn with swindon 0-0, but because Middlesborough hadn't won or something like that, we went up. That day was mega and lives on in the memory. My dad passed away recently and I'm just wondering where mine and my son's journey starts....and thus I'd rather morbidly like to compare today's vintage with that on 86/87. History seems to be repeating itself.

Pretty good summary Chris. That team looked good on paper but was shit on the pitch. This version is worse.

The 86-87 team had enough quality - lots of current and future internationals, current and future trophy winners when they were harder to come by prior to Sky's Big 4-5 Oligopoly.

This team has less quality.

That team started the season with a manager who was hopelessly out of his depth but had integrity. Followed by a total c==t who didn't give a shit despite being one of the most celebrated football persons in Britain.

This team started the season with a manager who was hopelessly out of his depth and an egomaniac. hopefully this is followed by someone who can lay significant foundations for the future should the worse happen

It's interesting that we were better back then but the crowds were smaller. We're getting better crowds this time even though the results are worse and tickets more expensive even factoring in inflation.

I'd agree that this side is probably worse than the last relegation on paper at least.. Dorigo, Keown, Elliot Evans Spink just in the defence. Frightening thing is of the 14 players who played the majority of the games that season, only 6 did the same in the promotion season.  We're are going to need a similar massive turnover of players arriving/leaving to be a competitive side in the championship

I was only six at the time, and have only seen brief highlight ;) so I'm not the best to ask.  But I can't think it would be as a bad as now. Also I am guessing than the foundations were stronger in order for the club to bource straight back.

The foundations were nowhere near as strong then as now. There was barely a player good enough who wasn't either transfer-listed or in the last year of their contract, training was barely existent and the youth set-up appalling. There was only one reason why we came straight back up.

Imagine how the poor sods felt the first time we were relegated having seen us in our pomp and majesty.
