Southend Utd v Aston Villa Nov 1971 FA Cup 1st Rouund
« on: May 31, 2015, 11:00:55 AM »
I'm trying to find any iinformation on this game when Villa lost 1-0 at Roots Hall.

I know the Villa line which include the likes of Chico Hamilton, Andy Lochhead and Ray Graydon.

I'm particularly interested in the Southend line up and who scored their goal?

Harder than I thought. Try emailing the club on   info@southend-united.co.uk. If they have an archivist he/she should be able to help

Cheers

Just spoke to my niece who lives in Southend. The bloke who lives next door to them reckons he was there and its Billy Best who scored. Not gospel so get the club to check it out.

I was at the game. Billy Best definitely scored the only goal of the game.

I thought it was Bill Garner that scored...it was the 2nd year in succession that we had got knocked out the FA Cup in the 1st round, Torquay the previous year.
I went to Southend that day and had to make a real effort to go the following week away at Oldham....we won 6-0, Southend soon forgotten

As an aside from that Southend game it was the last game of their Villa careers for Tommy Hughes (we signed Jimmy Cumbes) and Keith Bradley (sold to Peterborough)

Southend line up was: John Roberts, Alex Smith, Ray Ternent, Dave Elliott, Brian Albeson, Joseph Jacques, Terry Johnson, Billy Best, Bill Garner, Gary Moore, Bernard Lewis.

Best scored and they lost 2-0 at Bournemouth in the next round.

I wonder if Ray Ternent is the brother of mentalist manager Stan Ternent. It isn't a common name.

Both born in Gateshead and started their careers at burnley, so a good chance.

I well remember that cup game at Southend,as it was the only match i missed home or away all season. My friend and I just got on to the platform to see the tail end of the football special leaving the station We tried to hitchhike it but got as far as Rugby and in the end, ended up at Highfield Road watching Coventry v Liverpool Seeing as we lost 1-0 ,blessing in disguise really

Would have been good manners for Andy Lochhead to thank those who took the time to find this information for him. Especially DeKiup!

Which meant that 1972 was the year we didn't play in the FA Cup.

Bizarrely, I was at that game at Highfield Road but cannot remember why. My uncle a Villa fan through and through took me along and I think Liverpool won. Coventry had a player called O'Rourke (?) who looked useful but the final score escapes me (3-2 to Liverpool perhaps?)
