Premier League Clubs mapped by Twitter followers
« on: April 22, 2015, 08:44:33 PM »
There's a pretty interesting interactive map on The Guardian's website that purports to show which clubs are most followed by geographical region; with a more detailed analysis in the UK.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/apr/22/premier-league-clubs-most-followed-twitter-world

Obviously, I had a look at the Villa in their locality; and apparently our strongest area of support is....

West Bromwich East - 22.24% Villa!

Top 10:

1. West Bromwich East   22.24
2. Perry Barr 21.17
3. Erdington 17.48
4. Hall Green 15.48
5. Solihull 15.36
6. Yardley 15.29
6. Hodge Hill 15.29
8. Sutton Coldfield 14.65
9. Meriden 13.60
10. Edgbaston 13.09
10. Selly Oak 13.09

I was shocked that the percentages were so low - even allowing for the fact that Twitter isn't necessarily representative.  What's even more shocking is that Liverpool have higher or similar percentages of support in a number of "our" key areas  (11-15%); with Man U fans a few percentage points behind them.

I fail to understand why Erdington has only circa 4 times the percentage of Villa fans as Barnet, the constituency where my younger son lives. I can't say I've seen many Villa fans on the occasions I've walked along Golders Green Road since September last year! Seems flawed to me.

It tells me people who use twitter a lot are wankers.

Ok, it doesn't but I just wanted to get that in.

I can't find anything about how they identify whether a tweeter is a fan of the club; someone who hates the club and tweets about it; or is a non-Premier League fan that tweets a lot about the "big teams".

May be they do it on "followers" of official club Twitter accounts or something similar, and make a ridiculous assumption that a) all football supporters have Twitter and b) you support that team if you follow the clubs Twitter account.

It must be based on tweets, hashtags and so on. All this goes to show is which clubs dominate media stories and discussions. I'd imagine the legendary One Direction, according to Twitter, have a gazillion times more followers than every football club in the world put together.

Yardley would be higher if me and AD could be arsed with Twitter!

I suppose it keeps someone in work doing these surveys but surely there more be something for them to do that's more beneficial to society.

Besides, isn't Twitter a communication medium for the exclusive use of twats?

More a medium for people living in the 21st century, not those living in the past. Or old.

Yes I'm very surprised that Great Barr and Kingstanding don't appear on that list.

Are they electoral wards/constituencies?  For instance, Kings Heath is within Hall Green.

Shocking about Liverpool numbers being comparable.  Too many gloryhunters in Brum.

If I was a glory hunter, social media is exactly the way I would source all kinds of rubbish to post on my Facebook page.
