another old one on the cov road
the malt shovel ,,,,top of muntz street where the number 8 crosses

I used to go in The Malt Shovel at lunchtimes in around 2001/2002. The gaffer was an Asian guy called Steve. There always used to be a group of old West Indian guys playing dominoes and slamming them down so hard it made you jump.

Drank in there mid 90's and that's how I remember it. In the days of afternoon closing sometimes ended up in a drinking den on Ralph road. Just a house with a bar and fruit machine.
yeah i remember that place in raph road ,,,,some kind of market traders club , not to be confused with the east birmingham trades and labour club in highfield road nearby
anyway as we have moved onto alum rock/saltley theres ioads closed down round there
including the brookhill recently ,the rock , the havelock , the gate , the tilt hammer , the london tavern , the coachmakers , the whitehouse
the swan , cross guns , barley mow , etc etc

If you are listing the Alum Rock and Washwood Heath roads you can add The Ward End and The Pelham to that list. My mate had The Brookhill and then The Cross Guns a few years back. He left the Brookhill around 2008, had a short spell in Kingstanding and then had The Cross Guns till it closed.

I know a pub in Sutton,  I need one in the city!

Bloody hopeless you lot - pages of reminiscing about watering holes from hell in bandit country are no help at all!
dont think there is one now that its been stopped down broad st
the craven by the mailbox used to have matches on ,,,,,but its changed hands since
but lets face it ,theres not that many pubs in the city centre now apart from on broad st

The Craven Arms doesn't have a TV at
all. It's a real ale place and a lovely pub but they don't really like strangers. You have to enter via the side door rather than the front. I asked why and the barman geniunely told me that it was to discourage people from "just walking in".
Smelly real ale anti-social bore.

Blimey, all the pubs in this thread and all over Brum that have closed down, most likely due to the recession, and this bloke doesn't want customers just walking in.

The Red Lion in Shirley used to have a 'REGULARS ONLY' sign on the door.

He's taken it down but is still as welcoming.
