After first being made aware who he was I posted that he doesn't look like a Paddy Reilly as a Paddy Reilly should look like an Irish builder and not a Blockbusters contestant.

That episode of Fawlty Towers should never be referred to as 'The Builders' and only ever as the 'Orally Men' episode.

The variations of question around Paddy Reilly are together forming an excellent contender for the next "Why didn't Barry take the penalty?" question.

Who is that next to Sherwood? Who is that with Fox? Who is that talking to Randy? Has anyone ever seen Paddy Reilly?

All of those.

He sounds like someone from the title of a Val Doonican song. 'Paddy Reilly's Motor Car' or 'Paddy Reilly's Donkey'.

It was Delaney's Donkey, and Riley's part in the sorry episode was reprehensible in my view.

Quote
Riley slyly said "We've underrated it, why not train it?" then he took a rag
They rubbed it, scrubbed it, they oiled and embrocated it, got it to the post an
d when the starter dropped his flag

There was Riley pushing it, shoving it, shushing it
Hogan, Logan and ev'ryone in town lined up attacking it and shoving it and smack
ing it
They might as well have tried to push the Town Hall down
The donkey was eyeing them, openly defying them
Winking, blinking and twisting out of place
Riley reversing it, ev'rybody cursing it
The day Delaney's donkey ran the halfmile race

He has a song of his very own which gets lodged in my brain every time I see the name.

Nice to see Steve McLaren on lead vocals.

Didn't the guy who was actually O'Reilly, rather than 'his men', pop up again in Robin's Nest?

I'll be damned, you are quite right. There is a Mickey Riley mentioned in the song  "Paddy McGinty's Goat" and just plain old Riley in "Delaney's Donkey". Rileys all over the feckin shop.

Delaney's Donkey was on my mind because it was played on a show on R4 Extra this week. I should know better having been forced to listen to Val Doonican when I  was a nipper.

And there is even an O'Reilly St in Havana. Must have been a mucker of Hemingway...
