Who Stays and Who Goes
« on: February 11, 2015, 08:45:55 AM »
With the need to find out the routes to places such as Brighton and Rotherham becoming less of a fear and more of a certainty, should the inevitable happen and Lambert relegates us, who out of the current squad will stick around?

Also, given what's left, is that enough and would we spend the stock £7million over the summer and would that make a difference?

Personally I think the following will go, some because their contract expires;

Vlaar
Cleverley
Guzan
Delph
Benteke
Sinclair
Given
Bent

There may be others and it is a case of how badly do we need to move others on.

I think Kozak would do well in the second division as he finds space. His game isn't about pace. Two touch Westwood would get more room and do ok, but we would need two wide men and two strikers as Gabby and Andi aren't up to it, while the midfield would be ok defensively if we retain Sanchez. Gil may well go, but if we kept him, he would murder that league.

Basically what we're left with isn't that bad, but I am hoping we would do a Newcastle and the fear is that Lambert would still be in charge.

and there you have it - Lambert. it doesn't matter one iota who plays or what the tactics or formation are. nothing changes until he goes.

Gabby and Andi would do alright in the Championship I reckon.

I think that after his reasonable season, there'd be a chance of offloading Hutton's contract

It doesn't matter who stays or goes while Paul Lambert is in charge.

Goalkeepers tend to be loyal and stick around.
Guzan will stay.
Steer could be an able deputy.

Defence:
Vlaar would go, as to will Cissokho.
But I reckon the defence squad we have at the moment would do well and grow in confidence.
I would even consider using a back three of Okore, Clark (capt) and Baker. We also have Senderos.
Wing backs would be Bennett (doing fine at Brighton by all accounts) and either buy one in or give Lowton a chance at the lower level.
Although Hutton has done well this season he does lack a touch of pace.
Depending on formation used I would look at a couple of wing/full backs.

Midfield:
Delph will go.
Cleverly won't sign after loan.
Sinclair? It depends if anyone else is keen.
So a midfield three of Sanchez, Westwood (in a more advanced roll) and Gil would easily be good enough.
Grelish would also figure.
I would certainly look to bolster in this department, though.

Attack:
I'm not sure there'll be many willing to take a risk on Benteke, so he'll have at least a season with us.
Gabby, Andi & Kozak would be more than capable of doing well.
Robinson should be given a chance at this level, as he did well at Preston

They've all be shit so none of them are a loss to the club. Thats the only small mercy about going down, there isnt a single player at the club I'd keep.

Pretty much agree. Apart from Kozak, Gil and Guzan, I'd get rid. Sick of the sight of this lot.

We could do with shifting N'Zogbia on as well, think he's contracted to 2016 and probably has pretty large wages.

We'd have to have people want to buy them.

The only ones I can think of that we'd struggle to shift would be Given, Zog, Cole and Senderos.

There would be interest in 'taking a risk' on Benteke.  From Europe if not the Premier League.

While we all moan about the squad, at the back of our minds is the 'good on paper' argument.  How many times have I seen the 'man for man, I wouldn't swap any of our players for theirs' type arguments when we play Burnley, Hull....etc.

If we thought losing Southgate & Ehiogu to Middlesboro was insulting wait until there is speculation about losing Guzan to Hull or Clark to Bournemouth!
