I posted earlier on another thread that I thought that I'd read that Delph came from a family that kept him grounded in the real world.  If that is correct, I would put that down to his Dad reminding him that Villa stood by him when he was injured and suffering from loss of form.  I also said that I was probably naïve, both could be correct.  Well done Fabian.

He must be confident we are staying up.

From the BBC text feed:

"Fabian Delph has only scored three league goals in 96 appearances for Villa - can he add them to his game now he has a new deal?

He doesn't play today. "

FFS He couldn't score a league goal today even if he was playing you smarmy cnut.

ahem... brilliant news though, really thought he was leaving.

It may be smarmy but he does need to add more goals to his game.

He's said in previous interviews that he felt he owed us for staying with him during his injury problems. I lost respect for him when it looked like he was off but that respect has been restored with this news. Finally a player who (ultimately) keeps to their word.

Let's hope this is a big lift to the dressing room and the crowd and we use it as a kickstart.

The thing is I think it is fair to say that people lost respect for him on the basis of nothing at all. Just a lot of paper talk and rumour.

I would be amazed if there isn't a release figure in the deal in the even of relegation.

Good lad Delph, a bit of loyalty goes a long way these days. He could have walked and got himself a fat deal and there wouldn't have been many complaints. He's gone up in my estimation a lot, true to his word.

Very surprising, but very good news indeed.

It wasn't completely baseless - his contract was winding down, his house was meant to be up for sale and things haven't been good at the club (at least on the surface). Even Lambert, who must have known what was going on, said that it came out of nowhere.

His comments about the next few years being exciting, if we can get just get through the season, are interesting. Seems like he's been told something that has excited him. Inevitably that will lead to speculation about a takeover or money being made available but I think its a notable comment.

With the appointment of Fox, key positions being filled and the overhaul of scouting, there does seem to be some good things happening at the club. The problem is that they are all very subtle things and this is probably one of the less subtle things to suggest that things are going on.

Chuffed. Very good player. Following a positive with a negative, but with him, Sanchez, Westwood and Gil vying for places, Cleverley shouldn't ever be in our midfield barring injuries.

As if he is not unlistenable already, Jack Woodward has now started clearing his throat with a little cough after every sentence.

Agree with Tuscans, good shout for captain next year. Entering the prime of his career now as he is in his mid twenties and should be someone the younger players can look up to and aspire too.

Did not see this happening at all, may be the best signing we could have made this transfer window.
