Yes, it was 6. Carroll got a hat-trick and Joy Barton scored a belter of a free kick. He's done nothing since either.

That was in the immediate aftermath of MON leaving wasn't it and the carnage that occured.

I still think how on earth that result happened, Newcastle's next two home games that year were losing to Blackpool and Stoke and we still had a decent team back then, Young, Downing and Petrov all in the midfield for that game.

Edit: I believe aswell McDonald would've got the job full time but for that result. Certainly the board seemed to be edging towards that decision before the Newcastle debarcle which changed everything.

I think that and the Rapid home game a few days later cost him any chance of the gig.

I've never actually seen highlights of that Vienna game as I was at Reading festival but following it at the time it did seem a shambolic way to get knocked out.

I'm sure Paulie will be along in a bit with yet another vivid description of that ridiculous clearance Davies apparently did in that game. ;)

We were defensively awful against Rapid, and that Curtis clearance is still one of the most amazing things i've seen down B6. It would have been an ace shot from that angle.

Obviously none of us know but I think staying in Europe and even a narrow defeat at Newcastle would have got McDonald the job permanently. I had the pleasure of watching that Newcastle game in a pub/restaurant with my family that was full of noses.

The board certainly seemed keen to give it to him initially but understandbly they changed their minds after Newcastle. Was a wierd time as we came back to beat Everton at home next day despite getting battered. A wierd season generally.

Arsenal, 1 defeat in 16 visits to VP. Yet we've won three times in our last 6 visits to the Emirates.

Yep, Villa Park is rapidly becoming our bogey ground.
