From the Telegraph story about Cleverley:

"...Lambert is also ready to speed up talks with Delph over a new deal after the midfielder
was included in Roy Hodgson’s senior squad for the games against Norway and Switzerland.

Delph, 24, has less than 12 months remaining on his contract and though he is settled at Villa
there is also a risk that his call-up could alert other clubs.
Talks are likely to start after the international break and, more pertinently, when the window closes.

Lambert said: “As soon as players get picked for England things escalate so we’ll have to sit and see what he thinks himself.”

Honestly. Why the fuck weren't we talking to him in the first place?

Yup, basically that ^

If Delph ends up leaving, I'll never forgive Lerner & Lambert.

Well indeed it's vitally important we tie him down to a deal.

It's going to be a concern - Delph is one of the few that are still left on O'Neill-style contracts.

It wouldn't be a massive surprise if he were on £40k per week, happy to sign again for that amount only for the club to be offering £20k.
Really?
You really think that we'd be talking to TC if our wage levels were at Championship levels?
No, nor do I.

To be fair, I did post that quite a long time before the Cleverley story arrived.

The suggestion that we're not paying such big wages as we were four years ago isn't particularly outlandish.

If you were Delph, would you sign a new contract down the Villa right now? - same goes for Vlaar.

The naive side of me would like to think that Delph owes the club a little bit of loyalty, but does that word exist in Football?
Heh! Heh! your funny you are i like you, they expect loyalty from the mugs in the stands but would walk away in a heartbeat.

Contracts tend to get sorted out once the transfer window is over. I have always assumed that agents advise players to wait until they see what new signings are offered before committing themselves.

I am sure that they will make him an offer.

And there's no doubt we would have spoken with him or his agent regarding the intention of signing something or not.

Shambolic once again….letting one of our best players run his contract down whilst signing Cole, Richardson,Sanchez…

Will anyone of those players bring as much to the team as Delph does.. if Cole is on the £25k per week which has been muted I would rather give that salary to Delph.

Lambert has been given enough budget so far in this window to have tied up the deal…. he probably wants to get rid as he didn't sign him

P**sed off from Saltley…

Oh well looks like he is off

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/aston-villa/11214876/Fabian-Delph-deals-fresh-blow-to-Aston-Villa-after-revealing-he-is-unlikely-to-sign-new-contract.html

Quote
Fabian Delph has told Aston Villa he has no plans to sign a new contract and is set to leave the club in the summer, in another shattering blow for the manager, Paul Lambert.
Delph appears poised for the Villa exit on a free transfer at the end of the season, in a move which is likely to spark interest from Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton, plus Tottenham Hotspur .
The England international has been offered an incentivised four-year deal worth around £50,000 a week by chairman Randy Lerner, as the club attempt to keep him in the West Midlands beyond this current campaign.
But Delph has given the clearest indication yet that he is keen to pursue a new challenge next season by informing Lambert, the manager, that he wants to keep his options open.
The 24-year-old midfielder’s current deal expires in June and Villa believe they are facing a losing battle to persuade Delph to sign another long-term contract.

Telegraph Sport understands Delph is prepared to see out the season with Lambert’s team, and he will be one of the most sought-after free agents of the summer after recently breaking into Roy Hodgson’s squad.
He made his senior international debut in the friendly against Norway in September and then produced a disciplined display in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland, playing the whole 90 minutes despite an early booking.
Signed for around £6 million from Leeds in 2009, Delph suffered two serious knee injuries early in his spell at Villa, but has since emerged as one of the club’s key players.
During the pre-season tour of America he told Villa supporters he owed the club for their unwavering loyalty during his injuries. However, three successive relegation battles – with a possible fourth this season – and his elevation to the England squad have convinced him that he will have to take the difficult decision of leaving Villa Park to advance his career.
Delph is unlikely to play for Villa until late December in any case as he is sidelined with a dislocated shoulder.
Villa could also lose Ron Vlaar at the end of the season, with the Holland international’s deal also running out in June. Negotiations with Vlaar are believed to be ongoing and, as yet, the centre-half has not indicated whether he sees his future elsewhere.
But after an impressive World Cup he is also likely to have interest from across Europe, with Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal known to be an admirer.
Villa travel to West Ham United on Saturday on the back of six successive defeats, their worst run in nearly 50 years. Lambert will attempt to halt the slump without Belgium international Christian Benteke, who is suspended for three games following his controversial red card against Spurs.
Benteke is unlikely to be fined by Villa as Lambert believes the punishment was harsh enough but his absence has come at a damaging time. The forward lashed out at midfielder Ryan Mason in retaliation and Villa contacted the Football Association this week in a bid to overturn the ban, but the appeal was thrown out.
Villa and Spurs have also been charged with failing to control their players, after the fracas early in the second half, and have until Monday evening to respond.
Lambert said: “We thought the three-match ban was excessive under the circumstances but the FA have made up their minds. I’m certainly not condoning Christian’s reaction but we feel he’s paid a big price for it.
“The reaction of the players was normal after one of their team-mates was getting that done. Obviously Spurs were involved in it as well. Human nature will dictate that when one of your team-mates is treated like that everybody else will get involved.”

The thing is Delph has come out and said he wants to sign his new deal
He said that quite a while ago though. If I were Delph I'd be looking at this mess and looking to move to a more stable club who might challenge for things. If he moves on a free he might have a pick of more clubs than he would if he moved for a fee.

Vlaar I'm not too bothered about because he's not as difficult to replace and has been largely average frankly.

If we survive this season, and there are no signs of a takeover I can see Delph and Vlaar going, and Benteke eyeing the exit door, and as the big man has shown in the past, he's not frightened of throwing his toys out the pram to get a move. We can't expect to keep our better players if we consistently finish in the bottom 6. We'll struggle even being a mid-table side to keep the likes of Fab and Benteke.
