My memory of Gary Shelton, quite possibly addled by nearly 40 years of distance now, is listening to a Villa v Arsenal game on R2 MW (Radio 5 Live's dad, kids). From what I recall of the commentary, Arsenal were all over us in the first half and led 1-0. We came back a bit in the second to win 5-1. Gary was amongst the goals.

He was actually quite good for a stand in player.  (Gary Shelton)

The one player you never hear people mention from the same era was Gordon Smith - who to my mind was very average.

And the player who crossed the ball for Brian Little's winner in the last minute of extra time in the 1977 LCFR(2) was................................................

Football is all about opinions Witton - but I thought "Smudger" was a very under rated Left Back for us - Am I right in thinking in he was naturally right footed ?  Not that it should make too much difference if you're good enough - look at Alan Hutton up to a game or so ago.

Mark Blake

The pre season before Mark Blake made his debut I went to Villa park to buy my season ticket. I had a ten year old Porsche 924 with a private reg. A group of young lads stopped their kickabout in the North Stand car park and asked me if I was a player. I told them I was Mark Blake and signed a couple of autographs for them (they had pens and paper at the ready). I would have love to have seen their faces when they saw the real Mark Blake play for us. No prizes for guessing the one thing that distinguishes me from Mark Blake.

However his Villa career is judged, I think four goals on his debut disqualifies Stainrod from this thread. He was also involved in one of the most memorable Villa Park goals for me. The free kick routine against Leicester aided and abetted by Steve Hunt (who must have been taught it by his older brother Ernie) ;)
