Maybe not a legend but the nearest thing to a legend for a long time.  He had a great affinity for the club, still has, something that Ugo and Southgate to a lesser extent don't show.

In my opinion he is the second best centre half I have seen in a Villa shirt. Never seen such an effective centre half at set pieces, both ends of the pitch. Had he not suffered the injuries, he'd most likely never have played for us as he had the attributes to play for the likes of Barcelona.

I remember Laursen going off injured away at Fulham and I turned to my mate and said that's him done....unlikely he will be any good for the Villa with all these injuries....

He went on and played a substantial amount of games, became Captain and a superb defender for us, so what do I know.....

In an era where our former favourites don't seem to give a shit about us I can see why he'd be considered a Legend.

Platt, Richardson, Southgate, Angel, Savo; why oh why don't our former players love this club?

Angel does love us. He's always tweeting about us.

Unfortunately, football has changed in the modern era and players spending their whole career in one place are few and far between. So all the old farts who remember the 70s and 80s and are saying he wasnt here long enough might want to cut him a bit of slack!

I think of the best centrebacks we have had in the modern era....Mellberg, Southgate, Ehiogu...all brilliant players. but in 40years time when im telling the grandkids about the oldern days, when it was called Villa Park and before we came the Aston Red Bulls Stars, the two defenders I would tell them about would be McGrath and Laursen.

Ergo Legend    :)

"St George (who did for the dragon) - legend". Some people would argue even at this.

Laursen is a legend  - I can think of no more inspiring player in my time watching villa.  McGrath was a classier, more composed centre back, definitely over the time he was here made a bigger contribution, but there's just something about Laursen that made me proud.

His defending was right up there with McGrath in my view

The difference with McGrath is he could also play in midfield, and not just fill in, he would still be man of the match in that position,
he was a perfect centre half as well as a gifted midfielder, he was simply the best, better than all the rest
No one else comes any where close because he was the ultimate footballer, whearas Laursen was the ultimate central defender

I've seen games where McGrath and Laursen never made a single mistake, never put a foot wrong, I can't say that about Southgate Mellberg etc, as good as they were they were fallible, McGrath and Laursen were Gods on the pitch

Just a real pity he only played 80 odd games for us.

The term legend is banded about too much these days.

Just a real pity he only played 80 odd games for us.

The season when he played in all 38 games, (subbed at half time v Liverpool in the first game if I remember correctly) he was absolutely immense. Played 91 games in total I believe. Wish it could have been more but to get a player of his ability to Villa there had to a catch. Also I think it is worth mentioning that he only picked up around 7 bookings in that time, most of them in his early games. For a centre half in the modern era that is some going.
