Martin Laursen (legend)
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:38:37 PM »
Spotted this article on the the AVFC official site & it says everything about this guy. Another Paul McGrath, John Carew etc. who have nothing but good things to say about our club and each of who played the best football of their careers in the Claret & Blue :-

I know all the arguments for best people for the job etc, but I would love it if Lambert got him in as assistant manager.

This 'legend' malarkey is a bit overused and very cockney. He was a very good player

I'd have him in as manager just from reading that article. But I'm a stupid emotional moron. I love him. There I've said it.

Agreed. Good player for Villa but he just didn't play enough for me and is never a club "legend".
If we keep classing decent Villa players as legends eventually the word will lose it's impact.

Great man and player. A proper centre half

Remember the winning goal in the last minute against Spurs around xmas time and running off to celebrate with MON.

Wish we had hm and Olaf in our defence now

Fantastic. You could say we have not recovered from losing Martin. Those of you who are quick to write off overseas players please note his comment:

"It was a tough start, as everyone knows. I had a hard two or three seasons and then everything clicked."

I agree.

The only reason it is trotted out for the likes of Laursen is because we have had so few talismanic figures that would get close to that bracket in recent years, so younger fans don't have their own living legends that they have seen really. Laursen, Yorke, Barry, Mellberg, Taylor etc are as close as it gets for a generation of fans.

Totally agree

Great player for us for a short while, scored quite a few goals for us, seems like a cracking bloke, but he's not a legend.

The more the word "legend" gets bandied about, the less it means.

To be honest i think it can be used for Martin laursen - the term legend - but only because the word can be used differently be different people. In the antipodes, for example, legend when applied to people can just be that someone may have done something good, funny, or remarkable. Same as their use of the word freak. Words have different meanings over the years - look at celibate. Originally it just meant not getting married but the idea of abstinence linked into that and so the meaning has altered. It happens in English, and all languages to be fair.

Is he an Aston Villa footballing legend? No.

Is he a legend for running down the the Goodison pitch with Ash to celebrate with rabidly wild Villa fans in the 93rd minute? Oh yes.

Laursen is the best defender we have had since McGrath,
So if your young enough not to have seen McGrath then Laursen could easily be a legend

In fact I'm in my 50's and he's a Villa legend in my eyes,
second best defender I've ever seen down the Villa, that's good enough for me

Laursen was good but Legend ? Not in the same league as McGrath . I'd put Teale over him aswell and probably Southgate and Ehiougo

I was called a legend earlier for making a brew for my colleagues. I am a bit legendary though.
