Kevin Phillips retires.
« on: April 28, 2014, 05:41:58 PM »
Kevin has announced he's retiring at the end of the season.
Although he'll never go down as a Villa Legend ( compared to the present bunch of incompetents, he is) one thing you always got from him was 100% commitment. And when ever he scored a goal he didn't run round kissing the badge on the shirt of which ever club he happened to be playing for at the time.
A lot of people call him a journeyman footballer (whatever that means) but to me he'll always be remembered as someone who could rescue a game for you.
A goal scorer extraordinaire you could rely on.
I guess we'll never know why he never settled at one club, but you can't deny his ability to pull it out of the fire when you needed it.
Enjoy your retirement Kevin.

Good pro, good player. We should have kept him on for another year to be honest. He could have snatched us a few goals from the bench.
Good luck to him. There will be few clubs he's been at that won't have a certain degree of fondness for Super Kev. Had a knack for getting important goals.

To have stayed in the top two divisions at his age was an impressive feat.

One of the few that the title ' professional footballer' is both apt and deserved. I can never remember him diving or over exaggerating a tackle to get an opponent booked. I cannot think of a more popular footballer of the modern age and I am sure he will have a very successful career in the media. Good Luck to him.

He played his part for us.

Would've been nice to have signed him a little earlier than we did though.

Never fit into the O Neill ethos. Was neither a big bastard or a quick bastard. I don't think he had much choice. Shame really. I'd have fancied him to be a good option from the bench to nab important goals.

Kevin has been a model pro throughout his career, he wasn't blessed with pace but he could sure finish.

Anyone who suffered the previous six derbies will never ever forget the elation of Super Kevs goal at the sty.

I, for one, will love that man forever.

Phillips would still outscore Gabby and Weimann, even at his age.

Great pro. Would have loved us to have signed him in his pomp. Wasn't for lack of trying I guess. Gregory had a £10m bid rejected as I recall.

Scored the winner at the Sty, his future paymasters no less, for us in Oct '05 under Dolly. Was annoyed when O'Neill jettisoned him. Strikers with guile weren't really his thing, unfortunately.

Didn't Ozzjim scan through his goods at Sutton Asda during his time at Villa?
