Bears confirm Trott return for start of the 2014 season

Warwickshire County Cricket Club has confirmed that England batsman Jonathan Trott will start the 2014 domestic season with the Bears in a two-day friendly against Gloucestershire at Edgbaston on 1 April.

Warwickshire return from their pre-season tour of Barbados on 25 March, and Trott (32) is set to play in the friendly against Gloucestershire and the subsequent First Class fixture with Oxford MCCU at The Parks on 7-9 April. The Bears then begin their 2014 LV= County Championship campaign at Edgbaston against Sussex on Sunday 13 April.

Dougie Brown, Warwickshire CCC Director of Cricket, said: “Everyone at Edgbaston will be thrilled to see Jonathan return to training after the Club’s pre-season tour of Barbados, and take to the field at Edgbaston in the 2014 season.

“Having met recently, he looks in great shape and is certainly hungry to score plenty of runs for Warwickshire. He’s been a crucial member of the England set up for nearly five years and I am certain he will be back as England's number 3 in the near future.”

Trott is Warwickshire’s current beneficiary, and he joined the Club ahead of the 2003 season, scoring a century on debut against Sussex. To date he has scored 14,053 First Class runs at an average of 45.18, including 33 hundreds, but is also the Bears’ leading run scorer in T20 history with 1,871 runs at an average of 40.67.

He matched his century on debut feat in his first game for England in 2009, when he made 119 in the fifth and final Test of the Ashes Series against Australia at The Oval. He has since won 49 Test and 68 ODI caps with England.

Jonathan Trott, said: “I’ve been overwhelmed with the kind messages of support from players, coaches and fans over the last few months, and I’m really looking forward to joining up with Warwickshire ahead of the new season.

“We’ve got a strong squad that’s capable of challenging for trophies in all competitions, and I’m determined to play a big role and hopefully contribute to more success for the Bears in 2014 and beyond.”

Trott is likely to be joined in the Bears’ start to the LV= County Championship by fellow England internationals Ian Bell, Chris Woakes and Boyd Rankin as well as England Lions players Varun Chopra and Chris Wright.

Is New Road still under water?

Does this help?

Why don't they just accept that they need a new ground, New Road is always underwater.

The Bears have signed Shoaib Malik to play in 6 T20 games.

About time we signed an established overseas star.

They'll always be the Bears whatever the marketing people come up with.

Alan Richardson impressed with Warwickshire’s seamers during Barbados trip

Bowling coach upbeat ahead of two-day practice match against Derbyshire

By Brian Halford-COV

Bowling coach Alan Richardson reckons Warwickshire’s seamers have returned from Barbados in good fettle.

The Bears returned home today and next face a two-day practice match against Derbyshire at Derby on Thursday and Friday.

And Richardson reckons the bowlers benefited from their 12 days in the Caribbean.

“The guys all bowled around 40 overs in games and practice which is exactly what we wanted,” the bowling coach said.

“They performed pretty well in the matches. We arranged that innings would last a certain time and guys would bowl a certain amount of overs but they were not gentle games by any stretch of the imagination.

“In the first innings against Northamptonshire, Keith Barker and Chris Wright pushed themselves and they looked good. Chris has hit the ground running after three weeks with the England Performance Programme while Keith bowled brilliantly to lead the attack.”

Also impressive was Oliver Hannon-Dalby as he looks to push on after an injury-wrecked first year at Edgbaston.

“Olly is the strongest he has been since he joined the Bears and the keepers commented how much harder he he is hitting their gloves,” Richardson said. “He has strengthened up and looks a lot more assured in his technique. He bowled one spell of 5-5-0-1 which was superb.

“Richard Jones and Recardo Gordon both did well too. Recardo is coming along nicely while Richard has always been regarded as having a lot of promise so now is the time for him to deliver.”

Ian Bell says Bears in good enough shape to make strong start to championship

England star says Warwickshire want to compete in all formats this year

Apr 07, 2014 15:08     By Brian Halford

Ian Bell believes the pieces are in place for Warwickshire to make a strong start to the season when they face Sussex in their championship opener at Edgbaston on Sunday.

Bell and fellow England players Jonathan Trott and Chris Woakes will be available while pace spearheads Keith Barker and Chris Wright are fit to lead a bowling attack which will also include Jeetan Patel, who is due to land back in Birmingham from New Zealand today.

Compared to the ravages of last season, the squad is lightly touched by injuries with only Jim Troughton, Boyd Rankin, Ian Westwood and Tom Milnes unavailable against Sussex.

Troughton is progressing well after back surgery, as shown by his jogging round the sodden field at The Parks yesterday. Rankin has a back niggle which shouldn’t rule him out for too long while Westwood, on the way back from ankle surgery, will play for the 2nds next week.

Only Milnes, still waiting for his shoulder stress-fracture to heal, is out beyond the short-term.

Other counties have their England players available for the early-season games too, of course.

But Bell, who is likely to captain the team, is palpably excited by the prospects of the coming weeks for his county.

“It is exciting to come back and see all the guys,” he said. “It gets you going again about the excitement of county cricket and doing what you love doing.

“Our squad looks strong. We are, touch wood, relatively injury-free and we are going to have a strong team out for the first game which is a great place to start.

“Last year was a tough one with all the call-ups and injuries but I am sure those experiences last year will be good for everyone – management and players – in terms of understanding how to deal with that because I am sure again this year there will be some call-ups to international cricket.

“The important thing is that our squad looks strong and deep which is what we will need if we are going to compete in all formats of the game.

“That has to be our aim. Our championship cricket has been really good in recent years so hopefully we can maintain that and get back on track with our one-day and T20 cricket.

“There has been quite an emphasis on our one-day skills in the winter. If we can get our one-day level up to our four-day stuff I think we’ll be in a good place,

“The championship this season looks as strong as it ever has done so we are going to have to play very well in that if we want to win it or even be close. But we have players capable of doing that.”

Weather permitting, we should be able to win a few early-season games with a batting line up boosted by Bell & Trott. The first test doesn't start until 12 June. In a Bears' ideal world Bell won't get selected for the one day series against Sri Lanka and we'd have use of him for a few Championship matches.

If the bowlers stay fit then we are a match for anyone. If you take Bell and Trott out of our line up then I fear we will struggle with the bat.
