What do they discuss 'at least four times a week'?

It takes Lerner 4 calls to understand that Lambert said 'we go again'

It would be insanity to renew it now surely? We are only 5 points off the relegation zone for a start.  It's been another disastrous home campaign and god knows what that will do to season ticket sales come May.

He has been barely distinguishable from McLeish who we sacked, so why keep him? Continuity is a factor but being continually unwatchable flattens that argument.

I'm not anti-Lambert, quite the opposite but even I think this would be a strange call. Leave it to the end of the season, I say.

We'll need to strengthen our hand in case some other club tries to take him off us.

Maybe we are planning some new clauses...

- any home game without a goal = minus one weeks wages
- any game where the team has under 40% possession = minus one weeks wages
- any cup defeat to lower league opposition = minus two weeks wages
- any time El Ahmadi is selected = minus one weeks wages
- any use of the phrase 'we go again' = instant dismissal

Should save us a few quid.

Hardly a surprise. Lambert's is the safest job in football.

Forget a better manager, it's now obvious Lerner hasn't a clue and to think he could find one is now beyond a joke.

Lerner and Lambert (like MON) deserve each other.

It's starting negotiations, I'm sure there are a few twists in the tail to come yet.

I'm not necessarily in the "Sack Paul Lambert" camp (I change my mind on an almost weekly basis) but I see no logic to this decision at this time.

If we go on a fantastic run between now and the end of the season, we could offer him the contract then. The only job bigger than Villa that could, realistically, become available between now and May is Man United. I think that even if we were to win virtually every game and finish top six there is still only an infinitely-small chance that they would consider appointing Lambert as Moyes' potential successor. So I see zero risk of Lambert leaving Villa for a new challenge between now and the conclusion of the current campaign anyway.

If, on the other hand, things go disastrously between now and our last fixture, all we've done is made it a lot more expensive for us to get rid of the manager if he proves to be incompetent.

Added to that every player's agent will now be badgering the club to demand new contracts for their clients.

The only reason I can see for this is as a PR exercise from the Board to show that Lambert has their full backing. If that's what they want to do, I'd rather they'd shown their backing by giving him some money to spend during the last transfer window.

Good. Lambert is tactically smart and has an eye for a good transfer.

sorry I think you are wrong on both counts. His record with us is poor and most of his signings are awful. The worst possible news; Randy not selling - or investing - and Lambert the master tactician staying until hell freezes over. A miracle in the summer please. Randy signs some huge cheques, Faulkner appoints someone to the board who actually understands football and Lambert raids the tactics box and wins

I'm sorry, it's proof that not only does Lerner not go to the matches, he doesn't watch them at all. Stability is nonsense if you don't have the right man for the job - stability, in fact, is just a synonym for loss of momentum.

Not even saying that he should be sacked, just that he's hardly done enough, in a pretty rocky, up-and-down year and a half, to warrant a mid-season extension of his contract.

Agreed, Monty. I wonder if Lerner will be the first owner to have paid out more in compensation to managers than he has spent in the transfer market. As others have said, the end of the season should be the time to decide.
