I like Luke Young. He was solid and reliable, if wholly unspectacular. But honestly he still epitomised O Neill's worst tendancies. 5 million for an aging player on a long, big, contract.

Who he could have got for half the price the year earlier if I remember correctly.

Reo-Coker
Sidwell
Knight
Harewood
Heskey
Shorey
Luke Young
James Collins
Zat Knight.
Cueller.

That lot for around 30 mill. That'll sort our side out.

 :)

sad thing is - its probably more than £30 million that lot.

I object to Luke Young being included in that list. He was a very good full back for us ...in both positions. Far better than we have now.

nothing wrong with LY   but we could have had him for half the price If I remember right .

Younes Kaboul
Diego
Tomas Rincon
Antonie Griezmann

No idea if we could get any of them even with the 30m + we'll get when Benteke leaves but those are the sort that I doubt would cost the earth in transfer fees and would improve our first 11 significantly.

If we sell Benteke for 30m, we'll need to spend about the same on a direct like for like replacement

Shinji Kagawa

Not that he'd be likely to want to come here

Thought the same myself to be honest. He's wasted there. Obviously unlikely but agree we should exploit the fact there's a World Cup at the end of the season.

Am I missing the part where Benteke cost us £30m?

Am I missing the bit where Tottenham are a worse team because they didn't spend £80m on a direct replacement for Bale?

If Benteke leaves for £30m we need to spend the money improving the squad, how much we spend on each player involved is irrelevant.

No we won't. Spurs didn't spend £85m on a like for like replacement on Bale.

Probably more worthwhile to consider the wages any of these boyos are going to want before thinking about the transfer fee.

The thought of losing Benteke doesn't bother me so much now as it did in the summer. It's fairly inevitable that he will go in the summer, and if the funds are not there for quality players in midfield then provided we spend the money well it could be the breath of new life we need. Would hope for more than 30 though!

The frustrating thing for me there is it's no good finally signing an excellent midfield playmaker if the world class striker has just left the club.

I just want us to sign one in January even if he's only linking up with Benteke for 6 months, a bit like the Darren Bent situation.

The problem with signing one in the summer will be him just providing countless chances for Gabby, Weimann and Kozak to scuff into Row H of the Holte end.

What will we spend the 100 million on we get for winning the league this season?
