Peter Broadbent: Ex-Wolves and Aston Villa forward dies aged 80

Quote
Peter Broadbent has died at the age of 80 following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
The inside forward scored 145 goals in 497 appearances for the Molineux side after joining from Brentford for a then club record fee of £10,000 in 1951.
Broadbent helped Wolves win the Football League title in 1954, 1958 and 1959 and the FA Cup in 1960, and was part of England's 1958 World Cup squad.
He joined Shrewsbury in 1965 and had spells at Aston Villa and Stockport.
Broadbent won a total of seven caps for England, scoring twice.

Oh dear, another one gone.  I was only reading about him a few days ago in the light of Barry Stobart's passing.  A very talented footballer sadly past his best when he joined us.  My old man loved him though, said to me you can always tell class.  RIP Peter.

Peter Broadbent was when he joined us, as Dave has said, past his best.  However his best (when at Wolves) was so good he still made a big impression when he reached Villa Park late in his career. He was a player who had time on the ball, never panicked and was fully confident in his ability. In short a thoroughbred in an era of talented players.

Scored Wolves first ever goal in Europe in the fifties and conducted himself in a professional manner..always.

Quite possibly Wolves greatest ever player....and that includes Billy Wright!

Agree with the above - I was both pleased that we'd signed someone so famous and dismayed that he was so old (33!)

Shame for him he joined us as we started the spiral down.

Sad news. I remember Peters excellent contribution to the Docherty revolution in the late 60s. I also spoke to him a couple of times at his babyware shop in Halesowen, nice man. RIP Peter.

Sad to hear this, not least the fact that he'd suffered from Alzheimers, that cruel disease.  PB joined Villa about the time I started going to games & I was aware that, as others have said, although he was past his best he had been class in his time, and that was still evident in his play.
RIP

Did he score when we beat Manure 2-1 at VP in 1963?

He didn't join us until 1966.
