Throw-ins
« on: September 16, 2013, 03:55:20 PM »
Has anyone else noticed how often we either give the ball away immediately from a thrown-in or the receiving player fails to return the ball to the thrower?  It really boils my piss as we seem to be the only team in professional football that cannot master this basic skill.

I've been saying for years that our player movement at throw-ins is utter wank. I've seen Sunday league teams create space better than we do. How hard can it be when everyone else does it? Been a bugbear of mine for a long time now.

I don't think it's just throw ins, our movement off the ball in general is dreadful. Most of the players seem to think movement is running away from the player with the ball.

I thought that at times last season, even when we were crap, but especially the last few months, we did some superb pass and move. But the last 2 home games there has been very little. Delph and Benteke often seem the only 2 Villa players who even think of doing it. I don't get why we seem to have regressed back to being statues and relying on Guzan lumping the ball aiming for Benteke.

This has been a problem for years.  I can't remember when it wasn't a problem for us.  It drives me insane.  Where is the technical ability to, a) throw it to one of our own and b) for him to have the technical ability to control it and give it to one of our own?

It's a symptom of lack of confidence and indecision. The ball gets put out and they dither for 20 seconds before throwing it to the fullback to take, instead of being decisive and just throwing it as quickly as possible while the opposition are disorganised. This is followed by the inevitable 'vague chuck down the line', looking for the flick-on and generally losing the ball. It's really annoying, has been for ages.

In the past decade I have always thought various villa sides seem to give the ball away needlessly from both kick outs and throw ins.

Ashley Young took that really good quick one when Sidwell told him it was on from where he was warming up, as I recall, and we scored from that!

That's what happens when players are awake and talking to each other and move quickly to take advantage.  Perhaps they should show the film again in training.
Otherwise, I too have noticed dodgy throw in technique as Montbert describes.

Yes. I've been saying this since Big Ron left. It's amazing the number of times we offer the other team a 50/50 ball when should be in control of it.

Kick outs?

When the goalkeeper kicks the ball out.
