I'm sure it was open as late as 95, I can remember walking in and it being packed full of Geordies, and I'd missed that game in 94.

I remember being in there, for the last time, with my then Missus before that game and it really was FULL of Geordies. I wasnt sure if it was late 1994 but if you'd missed that game, I reckon that was November 95

I'm sure it was that game, yeah. It just suddenly shut down straight after.

We were milling about for a while after that, trying different boozers till we settled on the Villa Tavern.

Me and a few friends took our Geordie workmate to that game. We drove down from Telford with him wearing a claret polo shirt. When we stepped in the Tavern he was visibly nervous and not keen to show off his strong Geordie brogue. Our faces and his were a picture when we realised the place was full of Toon Army. Really odd as we used the Tavern all the time and have never seen that before. Good fans going through a shit time. I wonder how that feels?

I was there in the early 80s when West Ham paid a visit. Not pleasant

We used the Villa Tavern around then. The Mild and Bitter taps had a weird rubber nozzle on them, similar to what people used to have on kitchen taps. Deafed it after a while and started to use The Albion.

I walk past the Tavern on match days and the building work is coming along nicely. With the extension on the back it looks like it'll be a substantially bigger pub when it's finished than what it was when it was closed down. I'm looking forward to it re-opening. I've got a lot of happy memories of the old place.

Me too BDE.
But someone's mentioned it's gonna be a "hotel" and aimed at.....business types? In the week? On match days?
We'll soon bring it down to earth! ;-)

Me too.
I used to go there alot in my youf.
Don't understand what they're going to do with all that extra space they're adding, unless -  as FM says - it's going to be an hotel. I'd be interested in seeing the business plan that supports the case for a successful hotel.

There's quite a few hotels around there, or to be more accurate, subbies B+Bs.

There is a courtyard area for al-fresco boozing before the summer games.
