Anyone see resemblance with the 76/77 side
« on: August 17, 2013, 05:06:27 PM »
Probably hyperbole after the result today. However, some real similarities. Young team, great centre forward, great counter attacking side, underestimated by the experts and a young upcoming manager.

Lets hope the outcome is the same! Lots of goals, great attacking football and a trophy and fourth place finish.

Although 81 and 82 were great seasons for obvious reasons, 76/77 is the stand out season in my life time, just for the sheer entertainment

76/77 is also my all-time favourite season .... but I'll reserve judgement on this lot right now. We lack a Sid Cowans i n the middle and the defensive solidity that we had back then.
But ask again in 2 months' time!

Come on, they were the best Villa team any H&Ver has ever seen! We're decidedly ramshackle in comparison.

I can see the similarities, but agree with Mr.E in that although we've come a long way in a short time, we're not quite there yet.

Similarities yes , it will be an exciting season ahead and this team is only going to get better - good times are around the corner - at last!

I have been thinking this.  An exiting team that scores lots of goals.  I seem to remember we were well liked by the neutrals in 76/77 as well.

Wouldn't it be great if the score against Liverpool at Villa Park was the same!  Can always dream!!

A bit of a difference is that this 21st-century version looks like it might be capable of picking up some points away from home.

Yes that team was brilliant at home but not so clever on  its travels.  Shame as the title would have been a distinct possibility with a bit more resilience on the road.

When we start destroying teams at Villa Park we can talk again. Right now, the only comparison is the commitment.

I think we'll still toil at home more than away because the counter-attack remains our best weapon of attack.

We done well so far but we got a long way to become a top side. We need more goals from the team and pass the ball better so we can destroy a team with our passing skills like Barcelona. It is exciting to see the potential. I can't compare the team to the 76/77/78 era as I never went to the match as it is before my time.

Liverpool and Arsenal included

I feel a similarity coming on

Lets not compare these against anyone - lets just enjoy them for what they are

It is only one win against a team falling apart at the seams (snigger)

Lets just go again  ::)

Lets see first if we are 5-1 up against Liverpool at half-time. But even that would be forgetting that that was Liverpools best ever team.
