squad numbers
« on: July 19, 2013, 10:11:51 PM »
With the new signings coming in and the departures that have either already occurred or are impending, do you think our squad numbers are in need of reallocation? If so then what number and to whom?
As an example, while giving the number 1 shirt to Guzan would be obvious; who would be your chosen recipient of the number 9? Benteke? Helenius?
Of the shirts from 1 to 11 that are/as good as vacant I would go with:
1 Guzan (like I said, obvious)
2 Lowton (again, obvious)
3 Bennett (think he could do with a confidence boost of a first 11 shirt)
5 Baker
7 Tonev
8 Weimann (I know it's not vacant but I still think of 8 as a striker's number so KEA will have to move. (Yes, I know it won't happen but I just thought I'd share my thoughts on it)
9 Benteke (even though it will most likely be for 1 season only before he lights up the world cup & goes to a top club; I'm talking about world elite,  not spurs or arsenal. I think he. earned it )
What do you think?

They're probably not going to be far off these

Benteke might get 9, now that he's staying.

I thought Lowton had 34 as it's been his lucky number since turning pro.

What about 19? Are we able to keep that number unused?

I don't see why not.

However, I suspect that it would be an unofficial "Retirement".

Football doesn't seem to go in for the retired-numbers idea that you get in some other sports. I guess that all those years of just one-to-eleven would make it too difficult to honour everyone that needed to be.

It was his number when he first turned pro, apparently.
I would like him to be 2, as it proves you've 'Made it' to a certain degree

8 Weimann (I know it's not vacant but I still think of 8 as a striker's number so KEA will have to move.

Since when has the no8 shirt been worn by strikers? cant think of a single one. Always a CM number

JPA and Rooney both have worn number 8. Better than Kone's number 2.

With squad numbers it no longer really matters, does it?  The only shirt numbers that get fought over are probably 1,9,10 and 69.  I know which I'd be picking...
