First team games @ VP
« on: May 30, 2013, 09:27:09 PM »
Watching premier league years on sky this afternoon, I noticed Arsenal had celebrated 2000 games at Highbury.

How many games do you think we've played at VP over the years.
First team games only, including league and cup.
I'd imagine it must be in the region of 2900?

No idea but I know we have played more league cup games than any other team but most of our cup runs tend to be away legs. Pretty useless answer I know.

If we played 15 home games a season from 1897 to 1901 (the Albion finished bottom that year. Ha) when we played 17 homes games, the that is 145 matches. From 1906 when we started playing 19 home games a season until the league was suspended at the end of the 1915 season, so another 171 games, giving us 316 so far.

We then had 21 home league games from 1919 up to 1995, minus 6 years for the war, so that is around 1540 games, providing a new total (give or take) of 1856.

It has been 18 seasons with 19 home league games, giving us another 342. Therefore, ignoring the FA Cup and from 1960 on, the League Cup, I would guess we've played a minimum of 2198 league games at the home of football.

I would also add that we have more than likely seen over 2000 top flight games of football at B6.

Dunno but Ads' excellent calculations are 4.00 league games short.

During the period 1919-1995 we spent two years in div 3, playing 23 home league games rather than 21.

We also played two games in the abandoned 1939-40 season.

Villa Park and Goodison must be the only grounds where over 2000 top flight league games have been played I would have thought?

I didn't include FA Cup and League Cup games (as my lunch hour isn't that long!) but given the amount of semi-finals played at B6, even with the relegations we may well be ahead of Everton?

Villa games only, I make it 150 FA cup ties, 112 LC, 40 various Euro's (not inc the two intertoto at Albion), and 7 Zenith/Simod/Full members. 309 total. Also, not including War time cups.
