Ian Willars
« on: May 08, 2013, 01:02:58 PM »
Didn't really know where to put this so feel free to move.

Former Post and Mail sports journalist Ian Willars has passed away. Affectionately known as "The Duke", he was often to be seen at the end of the bar in the Queens Head in Steelhouse Lane, sucking on his pipe.

RIP

Met him in the pub next to Selhurst Park, the night before Ron Atkinson was sacked. The writing was already on the wall.
He would have some tales to tell over his career.

One of the old school of football writers who could get in the office at nine, find, write and file five stories by 10.59 then stand up at walk towards the Queen's Head, arriving just as the door opened without breaking stride. And if by any chance the door was still locked when he got there it was because the landlord's watch was slow.

We used to drink in the Queens Head before games and would regularly get early bits of team news from the Post and Mail crowd, we didn't need no bloody smart phones.
