Are we better off than we think we are?.
« on: April 20, 2013, 02:32:32 PM »
Given the amount of doom and gloom that was about in January and February, should we not be far more optimistic than we are?. If we avoid the drop, which, thankfully is still in our own hands, we have a crop of young players who are definitely improving by the game, a youth team who have just been crowned kings of Europe, we play a brand of Football which is beginning to attract some very favourable attention in the press, and the financial re-structuring of the club may actually put us ahead of many other clubs in the financial markets. We have 2 Strikers in Benteke and Weimann who are worth 30 million of anybodies money. I honestly think if we beat the drop, keep Benteke and strenghthen the Defence, next season could be very interesting.

There's a fair few people thinking and saying what you are.  I've enjoyed this season, despite the horrible results, because I admire what is being attempted.  At the moment things are in the balance a bit but I agree if Villa stay up there is much to be positive about.

Remember also that Brummies reserve the right to be miserable no matter how things are going!

We are I feel, much better off than we think, if we survive. Lambert has done really well to reshape the squad and wage budget on the funds he has had, and deserves credit for that.

You're spot on with those observations Mr o'Who!
I get sick of reading the garbage from the multitude of doom merchants on here. We have a lot to look forward to.

Even if we go down, which I don't think we will, there is still a lot going in our favour.

I've said for months that we'll be top 10 next season. And I guarantee that people will still moan.

That's the long and short of it.  If Lambert and this inexperienced squad pull off this escape they they'll have earned the right to not be questioned (quite so aggressively) for a period.  Let's hope they do as what they've gone about things the hardest but arguably most noble way.

I think top ten next season is very realistic if we stay up this season.
People moaned when we were top 6 under mon -some people will always want more.
There are knockers everywhere ;)

There certainly were plenty in town earlier. McGrath bless the sun shining!

Lambert has done or is on the way to doing what McLeish was asked to do. McLeish just made a fucking pigs ear of it and the football was miserable to boot. We are playing some lovely stuff at times and we are creating chances in every game. The manager has already targeted who he wants gone because they aren't playing, or if they are very limited roles. You put in some sensible pieces, throw in some experience in the right places and we will be so much more ready for next season. The template is in place for what he wants to continue to do, and even though getting to this point has been disastrous at times, if things can hold together we will be infinitely better off than when we started on this journey in August.

There's much to be positive about. But if we stay up, and I think there is more than 50 per cent chance of that, than I struggle to see how we will finish top ten next season unless Lambert makes a serious attempt at shoring up our defence. That is something he has struggled to do so far in his managerial career.

Fair comment, i think a defensive coach would be a godsend, after all Wengers got one in Steve Bould, and if its good enough for him.......
