Just imagine for one minute lambert changed tactic and went for experience but spent no money and picked what we have available today
                       Given
Hutton dunne vlaar Warnock
 Ngzobia Ireland kea Holman
            Bent gabby

On paper around at peak £70m of talent but would it be it get out of shit we are in?

No it wouldnt.  If anything, it just highlights how paper thin our defence / midfield is.

Still think Westwood and Lowton would be superior to Ireland/KEA and Hutton

And Guzan's done nothing to deserve being dropped either.

The key positions in that are Duune's, KEA's and Warnock's, where for one reason or another the players have either been missing or poor and the young guns have struggled.

It might not get us out of the deep shit we currently are in but chances are had all the above been fit, selected and played in their correct position (e.g. Gabby not on the wing) we more than likely would not be in the shit we are currently in.

Ideally Lambert should be able to mix experience and youth to get a decent XI but doesn't matter which way you look at the squad we are still desperately short of a quality holding midfielder

We need a mix of both. We've gone from one extreme last year of basically picking the most experienced squad, even if that's people out of position to this year mainly due to injury, being stuck with the kids and unable to rotate and rest them when needed.

Dunne, Vlaar, Gabby, N'Zogbia being available is huge.

Guzan
Lowton Clark Baker Stephens
Westwood Delph Bannan Bennett
Weimann Benteke

Would interesting to watch this at Bodymoor Heath - I reckon the young guns would win it.

Not much in it, but it's a damning indictment that the 'young' midfield, which has been the major weakness, is still better than the experienced one.  If ever there was one killer argument for needing to shore up the team with new signings then this is it.

I'd also pick Lowton over Hutton. And Guzan over Given.

The young team has a much better midfield and attack, in fact I'd only swap in nzogbia and vlaar, for Bennett and Baker, as our best side right now.  Dunne may be a slight upgrade on Clark when he's fit, but he's been out for a long time and fitness was never one of his plus points.

It would also be interesting to see how Stevens & Bennett would work on that left flank.
I think both are decent players and will improve given experience. I also think Bennett's got extra in his locker, he's a pretty skillful player

I thought he has his best game for us on Saturday.

He's been thrown into a poor team and then had spells out with injury.  If we can steady things up at the back I think we'll see better from him, but next season is probably the best time to judge.

Totally agree, John.
If we can survive this season, and I believe we will, these young guns will surprise a few next season.

On paper, yes, it's a team that should avoid relegation easily. However take out the players who haven't put in a shift for us in years or haven't even done it while they've been at our club, then its a no from me. I'm oot.

Warnock is better than Stevens imo.
