Genting probably don't 'need' us anymore anyway.
They not long ago won the right to build the new mega casino at the NEC. So, we have helped get their name/brand recognised. As far as they are concerned, its probably job done.

Until we get a government which wants to raise the taxation on gambling then the betting boys will start shopping around again for association with names which will give them some sort of anchor of respectability and propriety.

A founder member of the Football League forged from young men in the congregation of  Wesleyan Methodist Chapel?   Let them go and try to buy that prestige anywhere else.

Right with you on this Brian, but it's all supported via media channels like Talkshite and Sky, with their in-game betting and chats every five minutes with friendly bookmakers.

Having said that, football and exploitation have been comfortable bed fellows for some time.

I love the way Talkshit report the betting odds like they're reporting breaking news when it's obvious it's blatant advertising.

Just about every online betting firm has an office within spitting distance of my office.  Most of them don't look like they'd fit a whole team of head office staff in, if you get my meaning.

Its not about the brand its about the money coming into villa...

with all these relegation battles it doesn't matter who sponsors us we wont get the same amount of money... regardless of if we stay up or go down.

This bad on pitch lark is now affecting the money coming in.. which in turn will devalue club impacting amount invested... and we are desperate for investment!

I disagree. After the Acorns thing we went too far the other way with a casino sponsor. The difference in income between an unethical sponsor (alcohol, gaming, money lending) and more ethical ones  (Mita copiers) is very little in the overall scheme of things.

Of course, the most high profile tv sport advertising, shirt sponsoring bookie, bet365, is entirely based in this country.

Is also suggest Genting don't need name recognition to get a casino built at the NEC, they're huge in the industry in any case

Interested to see losing our sponsorship deal shrugged off, as if we aren't already in enough financial turmoil

I'd be happy with Dunne and Warnock out the door and an untainted Aston Villa shirt. We'd be no worse off.

I read somewhere yesterday - probably the Guardian - that some Japanese paint company has become ManYoo's 'Official Paint Partner'.

The prospect of relegation suddenly became marginally less distasteful.

The world has gone fucking mad.

We don't exactly attract big sponsors anyway which is one of the reasons we were able to do the Acorns thing for a few seasons.

IF we get relegated all commercial income will fall. No point in reading too much into a deal that is about to expire anyway and a lazy piece of journalism.

What do you mean by "big"?

The Genting deal is one of the biggest in the league. They also might not be a household name here, but they are an enormous company.

IIRC the deal is/was £16m over two seasons, pretty small when compared to the Sky money.

Yes, but amongst the larger sponsorship deals.

Money lending unethical?

How do you think Lerner senior got so rich? And how much money do you think credit card companies have made through online gambling?

If ethics in sport are a major concern, you're screwed with the premier league (whose richest club gets its money from a human rights abusing, vile middle eastern regime)

Oh, and after Acorns, don't forget our year with currency speculators FxPro

They're idiots. If we get relegated we'll be the biggest team in the division and about twenty of our games will be televised. Plenty of exposure for sponsors.

All good points but I think from an ethical position a credit card or even a f/x company is more acceptable than a payday lender such as Wonga.  I volunteer in a Credit Union and see every day the misery that these companies cause and I would hate them to be associated with our club.

Worried about going down but managing to repeatedly stay up despite the odds? Yes gentlemen, our new sponsor will be Viagra.
