Much as I love SGT, look at the following which is 02/03's activity:

Boulding
Kinsella
Leonhardsen
De La Cruz
Johnsen

I thought Johnsen was very good, and also came on a free from memory.

Shouldn't Allback be on that list as well?

what about Peter Crouch too ?

Wasn't Crouch signed near the end of the previous season?

Not only are many of the fees incorrect, but the buying & selling seasons are incorrect for many aswell. Mrs Unsworth came & left in the same season for a start.

The only decent one out of that was Johnsen.

Despite our current midfield woes, Kinsella was probably the worst midfielder I have ever seen in a Villa shirt.

That needed pointing out.

I'd rather have Bannan than Kinsella. That shows how bad Kinsella was. Leonhardsen was toss, but he popped up with some crucial goals at times.

SGT bought players like Leonarhdsen and Kinsella to 'do-a-job'. OK they weren't great, but we didn't get relegated.

Interestingly, these are exactly the type of players many (including myself) are advocating that lambert should sign.

While no manager is beyond criticism, I would be very very reluctant to critisize SGT (1 or 2) on his transfer activity.

on kinsella, taylor wanted to pair him up with matt holland from ipswich (they played together for ireland).

i remember villa agreed a fee and matt holland rejected the move. ended up at charlton the season after.

Mark Delaney £250,000      what a signing , compared to the Steve Stone one at the same time.

Interesting reading.  It seems shows a clear cut-off point at which Lerner pulled the funding plug and went down the balance the books route, having realised O'Neill had pissed the pot up the wall.

The figures for players sold in 10-11 add up to 31m and not the 27.5m shown, which means the net spend for that year should be 1.2m.   The net spend for the next two years (+21.7m-20.5m) combined is also 1.2m giving a total net spend of 2.4m since O'Neill left.  I'm fairly sure we also got fees for Sidwell (1.5m?) and Lowry (500k?), which would make the net transfer spend close to zero over that period, assuming reported fees are accurate.

Contrast that to the previous three years where O'Neill spent 102m (net 70m, excluding the net fee later received for Milner) on 21 players.  Of those 21 I'd say only maybe 8 (Milner, Downing, Collins, Dunne, L Young, Friedel, Warnock and Knight) became regular first choices.  I suppose you could make a case for Heskey as well.  Only 3 players signed in those 3 years (Downing, Milner, and apparently Knight) were sold for a profit.   You can point to at least 7 (Salifou, Shorey, Sidwell, Beye, Routledge, Harewood, Davies) plus arguably NRC and Heskey, who were little or no more than a complete waste of fees and wages.

If he's got any sense Elliot Short will be keeping a the keys to the coffers well away from O'Neill.

Steve Stone didn't really work out at villa.
